The prospect of buying your new home and making it all cozy is the best part about moving home. It enables you to turn the bricks and mortar into a space which you can make your own and reflects your personality. Once my husband and I pulled into the driveway of the house we purchased in 2020, we instantly knew how we could make it our new home.
Scents can help a house feel more like a home
Researching online is the best way to start searching for your ideal home. You can begin with realtors like Bellriver Homes to see whether there are homes that fit your ideal design and budget before you start booking appointments.
My husband and I had to heavily rely on our realtor and searching online for our house since we moved from the state of Kentucky to the state of Florida, which was over 1,000 miles away! Due to our online research (and the help of our fantastic realtor), we were able narrow our house search down from a ton of choices to our two favorites. We ended up buying one of the two!
Adding a hammock can make your home feel cozy
So once you have the keys to your new property and are ready to move in, this is when you can truly start to transform it into a home. Now that I’ve been living in our Florida house for almost a year, I know everything I’ve done to it has made it feel more and more like a home. Even during my mom’s last visit she said “You’ve really worked hard to make this house a home and it looks great.” I fully agree with her!
Here’s my best advice on how to turn a house into a home.
1- Redecorate
Adding a wall mural can help elevate your home’s decor
Chances are you are unlikely to enjoy the current paint scheme, so the first thing you can do is decide on the colors that you would have in each room, and enjoy choosing your final selections. Painting a feature wall a darker shade or opting for a patterned wallpaper is a great way to add a splash of personality in the room as opposed to painting the entire room in one shade.
2- Include Personalized Objects
Decorating with personal objects turn a house into a home
Decorating your home with personalized photo frames with your family and friends is certainly a way to inject your own homely feel. You might want to create a photo collage to place on the walls featuring important memories or hang a picture that means something special to you.
3- Spruce Up the Garden
Adding a cozy outdoor space help turn a house into a home
The previous tenants might not have used their garden much or the layout is completely different to how you would have it. Incorporate some nice comfy garden furniture for the warm summer nights where you can relax outdoors with a drink and book in hand.
You could also include some twinkly lights if you like to entertain your guests late into the night, or create a pet friendly area for your dog/cat to play and relax in. Creating the ideal garden environment will also make it more personal to your needs.
4- Make Your Own Accessories
Try adding blankets, plants and flowers to make your house feel more like a home
To really add a personal touch you can get a little creative and make a nice accessory to either hang or place in one of your rooms. Whether it is a homemade picture frame, flower vases, cushion covers or a door knocker. Get your creative juices flowing and create something truly unique that nobody else will have.
5- Brighten Up The Exterior
Add a comfy egg chair swing to your patio
The exterior is just as important as the interior and you want it to feel welcoming when you return home. Change the front door color, replace the knocker and add a nice homemade door decoration. You could also include some vibrant flower pots and fragrant plants to really create a welcoming cozy home for you to enjoy.
