Me and Minnie Pearl, in a cute photo op using my backdrop
Looking for an easy way to create a show-stopping party backdrop? I recently made a colorful balloon curtain backdrop for my birthday while traveling, and it turned out even better than I imagined! Not only did it create the cutest photo opportunity, but it also transformed our vacation rental into a festive party space.
The best part? This balloon backdrop is beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and can be customized for virtually any celebration. I hung it in front of our bedroom door so I got to walk through it every morning….I have to admit, it was a joyful way to enter into each new day! A kid would LOVE to do this!

Why I Love Balloon Curtain Backdrops
One of the reasons I love this project is how versatile it is.
This type of balloon backdrop works beautifully for:
Birthday parties
Baby showers
Wedding showers
Anniversary parties
Graduation celebrations
Retirement parties
Corporate events
Photo booths
You can easily customize the colors to match any party theme, making it a decoration idea you'll use again and again.
How Long Does It Take?
With two people helping, our balloon backdrop came together in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Using an electric balloon pump significantly speeds up the process, especially for larger installations.

Another Linking Balloon Project
Don’t want to do a curtain? Try stringing them around a staircase, necklace style! See my video on how to do this below via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden:
The Balloon Backdrop Kit I Used + MORE
For my backdrop, I used the House of Party Rainbow Curtain Kit from Target from $19.99. The kit included colorful linking balloons, hanging hooks, and a hand pump to help inflate the balloons. You do not need a kit! Here are some linking balloons and things to get if you want to make your own:
Get a kind friend (I got my awesome husband!) to help
While the hand pump works, I highly recommend using an electric balloon pump (mine is from Amazon and I’ve used it for so much over the years!) if you're making a larger backdrop. It will save you a lot of time and energy. I also suggest recruiting a friend to help—this project goes much faster with two people! In this case, I got my husband to help.
I got this one for my husband’s birthday and it was easier
For my husband’s 50th birthday, we bought this gold 2 panel Air filled Gold Foil Balloon Wall Backdrop and it was faster and easier. It comes with straws to blow up the panels and if you want to use this (I added balloons and a banner to it too). It was $6 and really cute! It comes in pink too, which I got for a future event.

How We Assembled the Balloon Curtain
I followed the instructions included in the kit to create each balloon strand, but learned a few tricks.

Laying them out by how you will hang them speeds up the process too
The balloons feature linking ends, which make it easy to connect them together. After inflating a balloon, I tied it off and then inserted the next balloon “linking” tip or balloon knot through the loop as I tied it. I continued repeating this process until each strand was complete.
To help my husband, I got the first three balloons attached in each color strand, blew up the balloons, and he tied them all together, with me helping after I got the strands started. Then he tied ribbon to the top of each one for hanging.
The hooks didn’t quite work for the humidity in our area
The key is to:
Inflate all balloons to approximately the same size.
Use the linking ends to attach, but link onto the balloon knots as needed.
Keep each strand consistent for a polished look.
The balloons in the kit are 6-inch balloons, and making sure they were all inflated evenly helped create a professional-looking finished backdrop.

My Balloon Curtain Measurements
I created a balloon curtain that measured approximately 7 feet tall by 9 feet wide.
To achieve this size, I used:
9 strands of linked balloons
11–12 balloons per strand
The finished effect looked like a giant rainbow balloon wall and made the perfect birthday photo backdrop. While I was not consistent on blowing up all the balloons perfectly to the same size, I did have some strands longer than the other, but I removed a few balloons and was fine with it.
Place a table in front of yours if it’s a bit “off” in lengths and no one will see this! It will deflate a bit after a few days, so you can make this in advance, but keep the deflation in mind. I think some of my knots could have been tighter.

A Better Way to Hang Your Balloon Backdrop
The kit included adhesive hooks for hanging the strands.
Unfortunately, because we were traveling and dealing with humid, rainy weather, one of the hooks eventually fell from the wall.
If I were making this backdrop again, I would skip the adhesive hooks and use push pins instead (always use hanging methods appropriate for your wall surfaces to avoid damage).
Here's what I'd do (and did after mine fell):
Place push pins along the top of the wall. (I ran to a grocery store and picked some up)
Tie a ribbon across the push pins to create a support line.
Attach a ribbon to the top of each balloon strand.
Tie each strand onto the support ribbon.
This method creates a much stronger installation and helps distribute the weight more evenly.
Some adhesive hooks may work depending on your wall surface and climate, but the ones included in my kit simply weren't sticky enough for the humidity we experienced.
The rainbow colors were significant to me….and my husband as this was a pivotal vacation in our life next steps :)
Optional: Adding Weight to the Bottom
If you're using helium-filled balloons, you may need to add weight to the bottom of each strand.
One easy trick is to place a small amount of water inside the bottom balloon before inflating it. This can help keep the strands hanging straight and prevent excessive movement.
Decorating the Finished Backdrop
Once the balloon curtain was complete, I added a rainbow "Happy Birthday" felt letter banner and some additional festive decorations from an Amazon party decor kit. I simply added some push pins to the wall around the balloon curtain, and tied the strings for the banner set around them.
HACK…HOW TO FILL IN PUSH PIN HOLES: if you are hanging from white wood trim, a bit of white toothpaste will fill in holes!
The extra decorations gave the backdrop even more personality and helped create an unforgettable birthday celebration space.
The photos turned out absolutely adorable! The colorful balloons created a fun, cheerful background that looked amazing in pictures.
I love how it turned out…so colorful and fun!
Final Thoughts
