How to Make Your Home a Smart Home

You may be aware that ‘smart homes’ are becoming more and more popular. Of course, homes aren’t being built with that kind of AI functionality in place just yet, but appliances you can purchase and retrofit to the property are starting to become much more popular among people hoping to enhance their convenience within.

Smart home lighting

My husband and I have worked to add some smart home technologies into our home over the years. We have had to learn, through trial and error, what was necessary and what was not. We currently really love our smart plugs to control lights all over the house. We love controlling them from our phones from in the house and from afar, especially if we forgot to leave a light on and plan to return home after dark.

Sometimes it feels as though all of the smart appliances and installations are a little gimmicky. Do you really need a voice-assistant refrigerator you can use to track your shopping list, or smart curtains that open in the bedroom as soon as you wake up with your alarm?

Some people adore this kind of convenience, other people would like to live in a home without an AI home assistant doing everything for them and syncing up with all of their home appliances.

Did you know?

Adding some minor smart technologies to your house before putting it on the market may actually help you sell your home faster!

The people that purchased our former house (they bought it the first day it was listed) were very excited about our Ring doorbell. They also loved the new smart washer and dryer set and the Nest thermostat.

But is there a way to enjoy the benefits of such a smart home without adding smart technology to everything in your house? We believe that is possible, yes, and with a little care and consideration, the following advice may help you do exactly that.

Read on to learn how to easily turn your house into a smart home without making it smarter than you.

1- Security

Perhaps the most functional smart appliances you will ever use involve those that guarantee you and your property further security. For instance, with a home security system, you can ensure that every element is taken care of, from the alarm to enhanced user control setting your preferences, as well as enjoying proper installation that can work as soon as the system is online.

This ‘set and forget’ focus on security can be a nice supplement to the additional locked doors and conventional wisdom you may use.

2- Simple Automation

Simple automation can be a nice way to greet the day without going overboard. For instance, you can set a smart coffee pot to begin brewing at a certain time in the morning, ensuring that your morning cup of joe is always ready to help you wake up and greet the day.

The same goes for setting timers regarding your heated towel rack, or of course, your central heating system. A combination of these factors can make your daily living more practical without having to endlessly mess with dials and levers just to live in your household.

3- Home Assistants

With a home assistant set up to take your instruction, to give you a weather and traffic report in the morning, to offer you news, and to set reminders, you can make general home organization and day planning so much easier.

Thankfully, you don’t have to install much into your home to make use of this, as smart devices such as televisions, smartphones and best of all, home assistants like Google Home or Amazon Alexa Echo Dot’s can be a good way to bring in voice assistants into your home without going overboard on the functionality you require. This serves as a competent and worthwhile solution for most families.

With this advice, we hope you can enjoy the benefits of a smart home without going overboard about it, and without feeling as though your life is run by smart technology.
