I Kept Tripping Over My Craft Supplies—So I Reorganized My Creative Space

Small Craft Room Organization Ideas for a Creative Space

Sometimes the solution to having more room to create isn't moving to a bigger house—it's making better use of the space you already have!

That was definitely the case in my creative space.

I have a 10x10 bonus room in my home that originally served as my studio, then became a Reiki room. Since I'm Reiki certified, I wanted this room to feel peaceful, calming and cozy. But as my love of art, crafting and creating grew, I slowly started taking over the space with supplies. See it in the very first stages of our renovations when we bought the home here, as it didn’t even have a finished floor or air conditioning!

And then I realized something...

I was literally tripping over my creativity! 😂

The Problem: I Needed More Room to Create

My 10x10 room had become a little too crowded. I had craft supplies, bags and other items that I wasn't really using anymore, and some of the older bags I stored craft materials in were dusty and literally falling apart.

This room, I’ve dubbed The Bird Room, is at the very top of our house.

It's a unique cupola with a 360-degree lookout over the area protected nature preserve surrounding our home, and it's filled with birds, plants and wildlife views. It's such a fun and unexpected bonus space—and another reminder that sometimes you just have to get creative with the space you already have!

Hence the name “The Bird Room” as this space give you a birds eye view of so much around Sanibel Island, Florida and it helped me see a new way to organize the room.

The room was also doing double duty as my creative space and storage area for things that didn't necessarily need to be in there.

I wanted a dedicated craft room and creative space where I could actually spread out, work on projects and move around without constantly worrying about stepping on something—or tripping over it!

So, I decided it was time for a creative space makeover.

The Solution: Declutter, Organize & Create Better Storage

The first step was getting rid of things I wasn't using.

Some items were donated, while others—like those old, dusty bags that were falling apart—were simply thrown away. I also reorganized the art supplies I wanted to keep and made better use of the storage I already had. I love using clear totes like I used in my recent shoe box makeover in my closet.

See my shoe and closet reorganization here or below in my short YouTube video via my channel @carolynjbraden:

I kept my existing cubby storage unit but organized it with baskets and art supplies so everything would be easier to find.

Why I LOVE the Electric Standing Craft Desk

The electric standing desk has become one of my favorite additions.

With the push of a button, I can easily raise or lower the desk to the height I want while I'm crafting. I love having the flexibility to stand while working or lower it when I want to sit.

It also means I'm not constantly bending over my projects, which makes the space much more comfortable for longer crafting sessions.

I Still Wanted the Room to Feel Calm

Even though this room is now much more functional, I didn't want to lose the peaceful feeling it had when it was my Reiki room. It looked nice (see my reiki room here), but if you aren’t using a room in the way you have it set up, it’s time to repurpose the space if you need it for something else.

So I kept my meditation cushions and lots of pillows and added a chair where I can sit on my jade stone full-body heating pad between crafting projects.

The result is a creative room that feels both productive and peaceful.

I Moved My Extra Storage Somewhere Else

One of the biggest changes was realizing that everything doesn't have to live in my craft room!

I have additional craft storage in the room underneath my craft room, which is another bonus room that I use as my workout space. See the storage and my extra craft storage/ fitness room set up here (though it’s evolved over the years a bit).

That room has a set of storage cabinets from Lowe's that give me plenty of secondary storage for craft supplies and other items that don't need to be within arm's reach every time I'm creating.

The After: A Creative Space That Actually Works for Me

The biggest difference?

I don't trip over anything anymore! 🙌

I now have a dedicated space for creating instead of trying to share my creative space with my workout equipment or piles of things I wasn't using.

Everything doesn't have to be perfectly minimalist. I still have plenty of supplies, pillows and cozy touches because I want this room to inspire me.

But now everything has a purpose.

Craft Room Decluttering and Organization Before and After

Craft Room Decluttering and Organization Before and After

My crafting supplies are easier to access, I have more usable workspace, my electric desk gives me flexibility while creating, and the entire room feels more spacious.

Most importantly, my creative workflow is better.

And that's the whole point of Problem Solution Girl, right?

Problem: I was tripping over my craft supplies and didn't have enough usable space to create.

Solution: Declutter what I wasn't using, organize what I was keeping, add smarter storage and create a dedicated crafting workspace.

Sometimes you don't need more space.
