My Vanity Makeover Solved My Back Pain!

If you've ever found yourself digging through makeup drawers, untangling hair tools, or bending over an awkward mirror just to put on mascara, you're not alone. My beauty station had slowly become cluttered, and my old makeup mirror sat so low that I found myself bending over every morning. Before long, I noticed something I wasn't expecting—my back was starting to hurt.

I gained more storage, organized my makeup, jewelry, tech gear, and hair tools, and created a beautiful space that makes getting ready each morning feel relaxing instead of stressful. Best of all, my back no longer hurts!

Problem: My Makeup Vanity Was Cluttered and Hurting My Back

Like many beauty lovers, I'd collected products over the years without giving much thought to how they were stored. My vanity looked nice from a distance, but every morning I was wasting time searching for products.

My biggest issue was my old mirror. It sat too low, forcing me to lean forward every time I applied makeup. My large light up mirror gave me plenty of light, but I needed a little something extra, a smaller mirror for doing eye makeup. That repetitive bending to see into my shorter mirror eventually led to back discomfort that made getting ready much less enjoyable.

I also realized my storage simply wasn't working anymore. Being a content creator, I get many products to test, so makeup was overflowing, jewelry was scattered, my favorite hair tools had no permanent home, and even my everyday tech accessories were taking over valuable space.

It was time for a fresh start.

Solution: A Complete Makeup Vanity Organization Makeover

I wanted a space that was beautiful, organized, and functional.

Every piece of furniture in my makeover—including my vanity desk, storage cabinets, folding hooks, vanity stool, and my new telescoping lighted makeup mirrors—came from Amazon. (I'll be adding affiliate links throughout this article if you'd like to recreate a similar setup.)

My husband was wonderful and helped assemble the new organizer cabinet, which made the project go much faster.

Adding a matching organizer cabinet beside my existing vanity instantly doubled my storage while creating a cohesive look.

How a Telescoping Lighted Makeup Mirror Helped Eliminate My Back Pain

How a Telescoping Lighted Makeup Mirror Helped Eliminate My Back Pain

Why I Switched to a Telescoping Lighted Makeup Mirror

The biggest game changer was upgrading to a telescoping LED makeup mirror.

Because the mirror adjusts to the perfect height, I no longer have to hunch over while applying makeup. It is also rechargeable and cordless. The light stays on for 30 minutes and then turns itself off. It has one side that has normal view, and the other side is 10X magnification. Both sides light up. I chose gold to match the gold stool I sit on while doing makeup.

Now I can:

  • Sit comfortably while getting ready

  • Adjust the mirror to exactly where I need it

  • See better thanks to the built-in lighting

  • Reduce strain on my neck and back

It sounds like a small upgrade, but it's honestly made one of the biggest differences in my daily routine. My large light up vanity is AMAZING and I love it for all the light it provides. I’ve had it for years and it’s Impressions XL vanity mirror and Walmart has it.

How to Declutter Your Makeup Collection Like a Pro

How to Declutter Your Makeup Collection Like a Pro

I Edited My Makeup Collection Before Organizing It

Before placing everything into my new makeup organizer cabinets, I took time to edit my beauty collection. One has a cabinet door and drawers, which I love for jewelry, tech products and hair tools.

The other organizer cabinet only has drawers, perfect for my makeup. On the other side of my vanity, I have this caned cabinet from Walmart that holds all my hair supplies. See all about how we added lighting to it organized it here on my website.

Instead of simply moving clutter from one drawer to another, I went through every product one by one. If my vanity desk gets replaced soon, I’ll be replacing it with the Impressions light up desk that matches my large light. I love their products and even travel with one of their light up cases.

If something hadn't been used in years, was duplicated several times, or was clearly past its prime, it didn't earn a place in my new organization system. I chose these cabinets because they matched a desk I already had.

How to Know When It's Time to Toss Makeup

Old makeup can become less effective over time and may even harbor bacteria. While every product has a different shelf life, here are a few easy signs that it's time to let it go:

  • It smells different than when you bought it.

  • The color has changed.

  • The texture or consistency has become thick, separated, dried out, or unusually runny.

  • It no longer performs the way it used to.

  • It's well past the recommended expiration period after opening.

If you notice any of these signs, it's probably time to replace it. I tossed quite a few products during this process, and it felt so refreshing to keep only the items I truly love and use regularly.

Using Drawer Organizers Made Everything Easy to Find

One of the best investments I made was adding makeup tray organizers inside each drawer.

Now every category has its own designated space.

My drawers include:

Instead of rummaging through clutter every morning, I know exactly where everything belongs.

This simple system has made my entire morning routine faster and much less stressful.

Best Folding Hooks for Bedroom Organization

The folding hook: before and after

A Folding Hook Added More Functionality

I also installed a folding gold wall hook, which has become the perfect spot for hanging one of my favorite decorative wind chimes. These are stylish hooks and hold up to 40 lbs.

Small additions like this help maximize vertical space while adding personality to a room without creating clutter.

The Artwork That Pulled Everything Together

No makeover feels complete without adding something beautiful.

I chose a colorful framed landscape print from Drool Art, and it's honestly one of my favorite parts of the room.

The vibrant colors immediately reminded me of the breathtaking sunsets we see in our Florida backyard. The birds in the artwork also remind me of the white pelicans and all of the beautiful birds that spend time in the water behind our house.

Every time I sit down at my vanity, the artwork full of pinks, purples and greens makes me smile.

If you're looking to refresh your own home, Drool Art offers so many gorgeous prints in a variety of styles. I also have a discount available if you'd like to browse their collection. Use my Drool Art discount code or link for 15% off.

I made my mini motivational framed art by framing a piece of black paper in a gold frame from Walmart and using a chalk marker to write phrases on it that help me keep a positive mindset. I change it as needed as I only write on the glass part of the frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to organize a makeup vanity?

The best way to organize a makeup vanity is to start by decluttering expired products, then group similar items together. Use drawer organizers, acrylic trays, and matching storage cabinets to give every product a designated home. I also recommend using an adjustable lighted makeup mirror to make getting ready more comfortable and enjoyable.

How often should you declutter your makeup collection?

I recommend going through your makeup every 6 to 12 months. If products smell different, change color, separate, dry out, or become unusually thick or runny, it's time to replace them. Regular decluttering keeps your beauty products fresh and your vanity organized.

How can I organize makeup in a small space?

Small spaces benefit from vertical storage and drawer dividers. Adding an organizer cabinet beside your vanity like I did can dramatically increase storage while still looking streamlined. Use trays inside drawers to separate makeup, jewelry, hair accessories, and beauty tools.

Are lighted makeup mirrors worth it?

Absolutely. My telescoping LED makeup mirror has completely changed my morning routine. The adjustable height allows me to sit comfortably without bending over, which has eliminated the back pain I used to experience with my old shorter mirror. Better lighting also makes makeup application easier and more accurate. This is why I love my Impressions vanity too!

If you love mixing and matching styles or comparing prices, Walmart also has fantastic vanity furniture, storage cabinets, drawer organizers, and beauty storage solutions that I've linked as well.

Can you organize jewelry, makeup, and hair tools together?

Yes! In fact, that's exactly what I did. By creating designated drawers for jewelry, makeup, hair tools, beauty accessories, and even my everyday tech gear, everything now has a permanent home. It makes getting ready so much faster because I always know where everything is.
