Home Repairs You Should NEVER Try Yourself

Home maintenance tasks are more than a way to update your home; they also enable you to deal with any necessary repairs, which if ignored, can lead to serious damage. As such, these duties can also be a way to make your home feel brand new.

However, home repairs sometimes get expensive, which is perhaps the biggest reason why many homeowners turn to DIY in times of need. And, while there are certain tasks where your DIY skills are sure to come in handy, such as resealing windows or unclogging drains - there are some which must be left to the experts.

Kitchen and bathrooms require special outlets

This is because the projects may be hazardous, or complicated to resolve, meaning it's in everyone’s best interest to hand these duties over to qualified professionals. With that in mind, here are some home repairs we recommend you not carry out yourself.

1- Roofing Repairs

The taller the roof, the more dangerous it can be to non-professionals

The roof is one of the most important fixtures within your home, given that it protects the rest of your home from the elements. As such, damaged/missing tiles or shingles can present a significant risk to your property; creating a getaway for water or even pests to enter your home. However, in order to be carried out correctly, Roofing work requires a particular skill set.

Furthermore, as this work must be carried out on ladders or at great heights, this work must be carried out by those with the appropriate health and safety training. After all, if you are doing this work yourself, you’re much more likely to fall and get injured - you may not also be able to carry out the work to the high standard that is required.

2- Plumbing Repairs

Installing or repairing a sink is quicker when done by a professional

Plumbing issues are more than just an annoyance, and, if left unresolved, can lead to flooding or structural damage within your property. As a result, it's important that they’re dealt with promptly. While minor plumbing issues (such as leaky faucets) can be dealt with pretty easily, others are harder to resolve without expert help - as pipes within your home are often hidden from view and hard to access.

Plumbers will have access to equipment that lets them identify where the issue is, and will know how to resolve it quickly - without having to tear down your house to determine exactly where the leak is.

3- Electrical Work

There is a lot to know about kitchen and bath electrical work

If you are noting electrical faults within your home, it's important that you hire an electrician to resolve them. Once again, this comes down to maintaining health and safety, as while you may know how to resolve the issue, electrical repairs require a lot of specialist skills to carry out.

In fact, a recent study has found that 1 in 20 people have ended up in A&E after trying to carry out electronic repairs in their home. Electrical work is often very precise, and making a small mistake could lead to dire consequences, such as an electrical fire. As such, it's better for your health, safety and peace of mind to leave this work to the experts.
