The Best DIY Computer Cord Organization

The Best Computer Cord Organization

With having my cord loving 4 year old nephew coming for a visit, I had to do something about all our computer cords. He loves cords and the last thing I wanted was for him to come for a visit and be harmed by all our wires. They were a mess and a safety hazard for our pets too! Vacuuming around them was also a challenge.

I love a great organizational challenge, so I worked hard to figure out the best organizational method for our computer cords and quickly learned organizing them is actually a lot easier than you may think. You just need a few organizational tools and about an hour of your time. Read on to see how we organized our computer cords and cables in our home office.

Even if you don’t have the same desk set-up in your office, you can still re-create something similar to what we did in your home. We used the following items for our computer cord organization:

You can use wire baskets (electrical equipment needs “breathing” room, zip ties, Velcro wrap and/or Command hooks.

The baskets we used were around 14 inches in length and 8 inches in width. We chose ones that were a little stylish and had plenty of “breathing room”. We found ours at T.J. Maxx, but Amazon and other stores have plenty of organizational baskets too.

We started out by using some Velcro wrap (we found ours at Home Depot) and combined cords and secured them to the backside of our desks.

We then zip tied the baskets to the bottom rail of our desk. If you don’t have a similar desk set up (our current desks don’t have drawers or backing), you could use screw style hooks or Command hooks to hang the baskets to the backside of your desk. Just keep in mind that the baskets will become somewhat heavy as you add more cords, wires and power strips.

We also zip tied one of our modems/routers to the desk to get it off the floor too. We successfully organized our cords on one of our desks, but our second desk was a bit more problematic.

Our second desk was above an area of the room that houses all the cords for our security cameras. The previous home owner had an awesome system installed and while we love it, we don’t love all the cords. We settled on just doing our best using the Velcro wrap and zip ties for now, and later we plan to build a all mount media cabinet to house our camera wires and more.

For now, we hung our battery backup on the wall instead of leaving it on the floor, we zip tied another basket to the desk for the power strip and other wires, and used Velcro wrap to organize cords. It definitely looks much better than it did.

We are happy with our cord organization and hopes it inspires you. We have vacuumed more easily and know our home office is safer. No matter your cord situation, there is a solution to making them safer for you, your pets and cord-loving children like my nephew.
