4 Exterior Upgrades That Will Help Your Home Last Longer

Something I’ve learned during my experiences in renovating three homes: Your home's exterior is the most important thing to consider if you want to take good care of your home.

If you want your home to look good and keep you safe for longer, you need to be aware of the things that could cause it to deteriorate. If you take care of some of the main elements of your home, you can prevent all kinds of problems.

Protecting your home keeps it in good condition for a very long time. Protecting the outside will also help to protect the inside, preventing problems that could be caused by cold, moisture, pests, and more. Here are some exterior upgrades that will help your home stay in good condition for longer.

Quick Tip: Try adding a “haint blue” paint to the exterior of your home, under your porch roof. It can help keep bugs away! Check out the quick video below, or check it out on my Pinterest account @carolynjbraden by clicking here.

1- A New Roof

Problems with your roof can lead to all kinds of issues inside your home. A hole in the roof could mean a leak, damp, mold, and other problems that slowly affect the structure and health of your home. Some things can be easily repaired, but even the best roofs only last so long. If you're experiencing a lot of issues or you just want to update your home, you might want to consider a brand new roof.

A new roof can make your home better insulated and protect it from all kinds of weather. The right metal roof contractors can help you to determine what type of roof you should have on your home, and as metal roofing can often be the best option, you’ll be on your way to making the right decision with the right advice.

Before you select a type of roof for your home, do your research. There are many types of roofing materials and you must consider cost, how long it will last and if it is suitable for the type of environment you live in.

2- Improved Drainage

When it rains or snows, you need water to be able to drain properly from your home. If it doesn't, it could cause problems with moisture getting into your home and damaging the exterior of your home too. One of the things that can greatly improve the drainage from your roof is gutter replacement.

Getting new gutters will ensure everything drains properly and you can also install guards to prevent things from getting inside the gutters and clogging them up. If you have any broken gutters or drain pipes, they need to be repaired or replaced.

3- Protective Exterior Finish

Applying an exterior finish to your home could help to protect it by preventing damage to the outside. There are various types of finishes you could consider that could help to make your home more weatherproof.

Siding is one option that you could consider but there are other options too, from stone tiles to using exterior paint to give your home a new finish. Not only will these options help to protect the exterior of your home but they will help it to look great too.

4- Replace Windows and Doors

Another smart way to protect your home is to update old windows and doors. With each and every home we’ve renovated, we’ve started with evaluating the windows. When windows start to fall apart, they can let in drafts and moisture, as well as affect the insulation of your home.

On top of this, you could also end up with a less secure home because your windows and doors are easier to break into. Replacing them will make your home more secure, well-insulated, and better looking too.

Upgrading the exterior of your home will prevent bigger problems that could affect the longevity of your home. If you want to keep it in good condition now and for the future, make some updates to the exterior.
