Your home office or creative workspace probably sees a lot of action! It’s a space where you can enjoy your job to the maximum or hide away for a few hours of pure concentration. Whatever you use your office or studio space for, it must be kept as tidy as possible.

Aim to clean your working space at least once a week and book deep cleaning and carpet cleaning services monthly.

Here are some other tips that can help you tackle the stuff before the stuff becomes overwhelming!

Electronics

We might not think about it, or not very much, just how dirty some of our electronics are. Think about how often we go about our daily lives, and then come to sit at the keyboard and type. Or use the mouse.

Running our hands through our hair, grabbing mugs from the cupboard, and eating. All of the dirt and grime ends up on your electronics - and indeed your mobile phone.

  • Have a packet of antibacterial wipes that are safe for electronics, and carefully wipe down all of the buttons and other equipment you use.

  • Gently tip your keyboard upside down to let out any dust and crumbs, then use a keyboard putty to clean the rest of the debris.

Electronics: Part Two

If you use machinery or have a lot of cables lying around, it’s time to take stock of what they are all used for.

  • Carefully label everything (you don’t need to do this weekly, of course!), and ensure that it goes back to where it is usually stored.

  • Cables can post a trip hazard depending on where they are placed, so be sure to tidy them away using cable ties, a cable box, and tidy cable zips. You can also buy specialist cable storage solutions from www.singularsound.com which can be an extremely efficient means of tidying cables and cords away.

Do you carefully name every file so that you can find it when you need it again? Or do you hope that you can recall what you typed?

Paperwork

Creatives seem to have piles of ideas mixed in with important business documents. The paperwork can pile up pretty quickly and get messy too. Having the proper paper storage is the first step to becoming more organized, and using it correctly is the next.

  • Spend a few hours each week checking through the paperwork you have. What do you need, what can be shredded, and what should be digitized.

  • Any folders you use should be clearly labeled so that it helps this job become one of the quickest to tackle.

Work area

This one can be done every morning or every evening. Carefully prepare your work area so that everything you need is there when you head to your workstation. It can help to prepare a list of items to check off as you arrange it.

  • Small trays, pen holders, a to-do notebook, and labeling are critical to a great workspace.

  • Tidy workspaces lend themselves to producing exciting and productive and creative work sessions - so make an effort to get it done!
