Years ago, my husband and I visited Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water home. It was beautiful! A simple, yet modern design built to fit in with nature….my dream home!

Feeling inspired, the same year I created this “gingerbread” house in a similar design to the original home. I’ve always loved gingerbread houses, but I never saw one that looked like Falling Water. So, I made it happen!
Being a classroom teacher at the time, I lacked a lot of free time, so I created this one very simply.
Here’s how I did it:
On a large wooden white painted board, I started to construct the house out of graham crackers and royal icing. The royal icing served as the “glue” to hold it all together.
I made a crispy rice cereal mixture (like Rice Krispy cereal treats) and shaped it as needed to use as supports for the house construction.
I spread colored royal icing on top of some of the graham crackers and allowed them to dry before using in the construction. This added some color and texture to the house so it wouldn’t look just like a bunch of graham crackers stuck together.
I added some chocolate sprinkles to some of the graham crackers before they dried to create more texture.
I dyed fondant icing in various colors and shaped it with my hands and a rolling pin to create details like windows, a sled, a snowman, presents and more. I stuck them to the house and to the board with royal icing.
I piped green dyed royal icing on sugar ice cream cones for pine trees and added Christmas themed sprinkles for decor.
I piped a royal icing “river” in front of the house and when it dried, I painted it with some food dyes in greens, browns and blacks to make it look realistic.
I piped royal icing on the edges of the house and into the “river” for snowy details.
I piped white royal icing onto the entire board around the house and added coconut to make it look like snow.
I added details like peppermint sticks and graham cracker pieces to create a walkway
Everything I used was edible so, in theory, you could eat it BUT I’m not sure I would. I actually entered mine in a local gingerbread house contest. Though I didn’t win, I had lots of fun creating it!
