Ahhh…Champagne Grapes. The cutest little grapes on the planet!
I came across these in Whole Foods and had to taste one. I was blown away to learn that they taste EXACTLY like sweet full sized grapes. They are just smaller! I was making my SMASHED Chickpea Salad with Nuts and Berries and Whole Foods was out of regular sized organic purple grapes, so I purchased the champagne grapes instead.
In my recipe, you have to cut the grapes in half, but not when using champagne grapes! They are the perfect addition to any salad. You just have to add some more to get the same grape-y taste.
Champagne grapes are the size of a pea (sometimes smaller) and are often used in cooking and baking, but they are also used to garnish glasses of champagne (at least in the United States). They are only known as “Champagne Grapes” in the United States, as they were rebranded this way by Allin Corrin for a marketing campaign. They are known elsewhere by the name “Black Corinth Grapes”.
They are said to be native to Greece, rarely used in making wine and never used in making champagne. Go figure!

I think cooking them up with a little vegan butter and spreading it on some toast (homemade jelly!) may be in my near future! They also would be perfect in some yogurt, on top of cereal or in a fruit salad.
Where to buy: I purchased mine at Whole Foods, but you may be able to find them at a local grocery store in the specialty foods section. They are mostly available late spring through early fall in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
