My Sweet Inspiration

With never having tasted matcha (a Japanese Green Tea), but seeing it trend online, I got curious about the beautiful green powder and why it’s so popular. After researching and learning it has an earthy flavor, yet notes of sweetness, I also discovered many love it. I also knew it would make a perfect natural food dye. With being somewhat sweet, figured it’d pair perfectly with white chocolate to make a fun Halloween spooky, sweet, crunchy treat, so the experimenting began.

Creative Variations

In seeing witch finger candy in a Vermont Country Store catalog, I added this to my pretzel rod creation inspiration and added some candy eye versions as well. You could also swap white chocolate for milk or dark chocolate, add monster “hair” with sprinkles or shredded coconut. Try to make “Frankenstein” pretzels with black icing stitches. There’s a lot a fun décor you can add to chocolate covered pretzels!

Why You’ll Love These Matcha Monster Pretzels

With always loving chocolate covered pretzels (there’s something about that balance of a salty sweet dessert!), this spooky treat idea came to me naturally. With using simple ingredients and having minimal prep time, my recipe can be your go-to recipe for Halloween parties, monster themed birthdays, or anytime you want more matcha, sweet and salty flavors in your life.

Other Salty Sweet Combos

Anytime I think of salty sweet recipes, I also think of Strawberry Pretzel Salad. I’ve made it for parties and potlucks and it’s always a hit. I know others love salt and sweet and when eaten in moderation, it can hit a craving in a very good way. Taste of Home has a huge article dedicated to salty sweet desserts, so I am confident many are on board with me for this flavor combo.

Speaking of fun flavor combos, my peanut butter and jelly cups are delicious and easy to make too! See me make them in my 1-minute video below or via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden:

Do These Taste Like Matcha?

My husband can attest that the matcha does add a bit of flavor, but in a good way. He loves white chocolate on its own, but with the little amount of matcha used in this recipe, it merely enhances the flavor a bit, and does not hinder it. I mostly used it for the pea green color and out of curiosity of its taste. I only could taste the white chocolate, as all our taste buds are different!

The ingredients for Matcha Monster Pretzels

How-To:

Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.

Place your chocolate in a glass measuring cup with the 1-2 teaspoons shortening (use 1 to start and if your chocolate is thick, add the second teaspoon as needed) and place in the microwave. Melt the chocolate in 30 second increments on 50% power. Stir using a spatula or spoon in between the time increments and keep going until it’s melted and creamy. Do this slowly so you don’t burn the chocolate. You could alternatively use a double boiler method to melt the chocolate.

This no-bake dessert is a breeze to make

Add in the matcha powder and stir until dissolved completely and your chocolate is a beautiful green color.

Swirl the rods to remove excess chocolate

Dip a pretzel rod into the chocolate, lift it out and swirl the rod a bit to remove excess chocolate. I only dipped the top part of the rod, but you can do what you like.

Lay onto the parchment lined baking tray.

Allow to dry for 5 minutes or until the chocolate begins to set/harden.

Almond slices make the cutest “nails”

While the chocolate is starting to set, promptly use your tweezers or fingers to add the décor. For witchy or monster fingers, add a sliced almond to the top of each rod and some sprinkles below it horizontally to represent finger lines. Add eyes at the top of each rod for funny monster eyes.

Tweezers can help you decorate them more easily

Allow to fully dry to let the décor stick. Place the tray into a refrigerator to speed up the chocolate hardening.

I stored mine in a sealed container in my pantry to keep them fresh and firm (we live in south Florida and everything melts here…even in the winter sometimes!).
