How to Create a Mermaid Hair and Makeup Look

I’m a Kentucky girl that moved to Florida, so it’s no wonder I am always now feeling mermaid vibes. On top of living in Florida, I also live on an island, Sanibel Island, which makes me feel even more mermaid-ish.

The mermaid look can be worn anytime of year

To create a beachy mermaid look that can be worn for a night out or be worn during the day any time of year, I’ve put together this easy mermaid beauty tutorial. Read on to learn how to create a mermaid hair and makeup look. All brands I used are cruelty free!

This version is a party mermaid look

Mermaid Hair Tutorial

Start with your hair. The only reason why I say start with this is because I slept in braids overnight to create my wavy hair. Here’s how: I create heat free mermaid waves in my hair by using Beachwaver Braid Balm and braiding my damp hair into two sections.

I then sleep in my braids and take my hair out of the braids the next day. After taking out my braids, I add a bit more Beachwaver Braid Balm to smooth out my curls and lock them into place.

Braid Balm definitely holds my curls longer than when I do not use it

Mermaid Makeup Tutorial

For my mermaid inspired makeup, I applied my regular serum SPF 50 face sunscreen (it Cosmetics Hello Sunshine) primer (Thrive Causmetics Filtered Effects) and foundation (it Cosmetics CC Cream).

I used some pink eyeshadow from the Natasha Denona Love Palette to create a pink winged liner look. I also added some pink and purple eyeshadows from the palette too. I used the purple eyeshadow to create my own soft purple eyeliner.

I used Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions for my lashes (which I love it!) and added some of my favorite everyday faux lashes, Ardell Naked Lashes #424, on top.

Creating faux freckles is easy

I used a Natasha Denona bronzing powder to create faux freckles. You could use any dark bronzer for this or you could try a faux freckle pen.

I have been using this it Cosmetics blush for many years

I love it Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores blush and use it often. I used a light pink version of it for this look.

I love Buxom plumping gloss in Dolly

I added Buxom plumping lip cream in Dolly to add a light touch of purple to my lips.

I have used Bare Mineral Warmth since it hit the market many years ago

I have loved Bare Minerals Warmth All Over Face Color since it hit the market many, many years ago. I’ve used lots of bronzers over the years, but this one always gives my skin the perfect “tan” look. I remember seeing the Bare Minerals creator Leslie Blodgett creating beautiful looks with her makeup line on QVC and I still truly love the Bare Mineral makeup.

I use Ad Gem to attach crystals and pearls to my face

I used AdGem to attach some flatback pearls to my skin.

After setting my makeup with setting powder, I used a Natasha Denona palette to add some shimmery highlighter to my skin. The palette I used is no longer made, but the brand Wet n Wild has a similar highlighter to the one I used.

This mermaid makeup brush set is super cute and similar to my mermaid highlighter brush.

To complete the look, I created Mermaid sunglasses and you can get the tutorial by clicking here. In the post, I also talk about the dress I created using sequin mermaid fabric. I also created Mermaid hair clips and you can get that tutorial by clicking here.

My every day mermaid look

I love the overall look. The pink and purple makeup is something I wear often as purple looks really good with brown eyes. I loved the color combination as a child, so it’s no wonder that I still love it as an adult.

My Mermaid Makeup

For the everyday mermaid look, I added a sweatshirt I’ve had for many years and got at Express. The iridecent beads definitely felt mermaid-ish to me, even though it’s a sweater that I mostly wear in the winter.

My hair is very mermaid worthy

If mermaid vibes is the intention, this mermaid makeup and hair tutorial can help you achieve the look very simply. You can wear it in the summer or winter or anytime of the year that you want to feel beachy mermaid vibes. Learn more about living with mermaid vibes in this article from medium.com.
