How To Make a Unicorn Kisses Flower Cake

Another recreation of a flower arrangement from the 1-800-Flowers website. The cake on their website is called a Birthday Wishes Flower cake, and it is SUPER CUTE. With all the spring birthdays my family has, I knew I had to try to create my own version. It’d be cute for Mother’s Day, a wedding centerpiece, someone’s birthday (especially someone that can’t eat real cake) or just because.

I love how my unicorn cake turned out!

I was feeling inspired by unicorns at the time, and even Trader Joe’s had some unicorn colored baby’s breath, so I designed my project in my head and then it was born. I especially love the color scheme of light purple, pink, baby blue, lime green and yellow. I have loved those colors since I was a kid…some things never change. Read on to learn how to make a unicorn kisses flower cake, which is made out of flowers (meaning it’s not edible).

Some Flower Tips for You and Special Events:

If you can’t make your own unicorn kisses flower cake or just don’t have time, you can easily order one. The price of ordering flowers though usually deters me from doing it though. I know the flower arrangement prices are often fair (you have to pay the florist for their time and supplies) but the delivery fee is always what prevents me from sending them. And, sometimes the pre-made flower arrangements are just too much for my budget.

I loved the unicorn colors I used for this cake

I often pick up flowers from local grocery stores, Sam’s Club or Costco because they are well priced and actually really great flowers! Trader Joe’s has great prices on flowers too. I once had Whole Foods order me flowers for a wedding I was helping with due to their good prices on flowers, and they did a great job. Get more flower arrangement tips from the Martha Stewart website.

I used a mixture of florist flowers and grocery store flowers for my DIY flower dog arrangement project, which turned out very nicely! See how I made my cute flower dog arrangement by clicking here, or see it in a quick 1-minute video below via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden.

For my unicorn kisses flower cake, I was able to get all my flowers from Trader Joe’s. Depending on what flowers you use, you may need more or less than I needed. You also can make it mini-sized by using smaller floral rounds. If you loved the unicorn colored baby’s breath but can’t find it, use this tip I got from a florist when I made wedding cakes:

To color flowers safely, simply use a flower dye spray. I once was making a wedding cake and the bride’s florist supplied me with white flowers. The bride was very specific that she wanted the flowers to be pink, so the florist sprayed them with pink flower dye and they were perfect!

Full Project Supply List for My Unicorn Kisses Flower Cake Arrangement:

  • Plastic or glass cake stand or large plate (I used both)

  • 3 circles of floral foam (I used 6.5-inch rounds)

  • I used about 4 bouquets of flowers (for a total of about 4 dozen flowers or so, the amount you need depends on the size of flowers and the size of floral rounds)

  • 4.5 inch wood dowel (I had 12-inch dowels and used a small saw to cut it to the height of my 3 stacked cake rounds)

  • Wood skewer

  • Scissors or knife for trimming the flowers

  • Large bowl of water for soaking the floral foam

Optional: Fine mist water bottle, if you want unicorn colored flowers and can’t find them, spray baby’s breath with flower dye spray

Note: You could alternatively use artificial flowers or dried flowers too, which would make it last forever! If you do this, you do not need to soak the floral foam block in water.

 Directions:

1—Place your floral foam circles into a large bowl of water. Allow it to soak and absorb enough water until it no longer floats (this can take anywhere from 10-15 minutes or a bit longer).

First soak your floral foam in a bowl of water

2—Stack the three rounds onto a plate or cake stand. Mine stood about 4.5 inches in height.

My flower rounds stood up about 4.5 inches when stacked

3—Place a wooden dowel (cut to the height of the cake) in the center of the rounds. This will keep them together.

The wood dowel keeps the rounds together

4—Select your first flower and trim its stem to about 2-4 inches. Careful place the stem into the floral foam rounds starting at the bottom, until it is all the way in.

Cut your flowers with scissors or a knife

5—If you have a hard time getting the flowers into the rounds, use the wooden skewer to poke a hole first, then place the flower stem into the hole. Some stems are softer than others.

Place flowers into the floral foam “cake”

6—Now continue to place flowers in the rest of the floral foam, circling each foam round.

Use a wood skewer to make holes if your flowers have soft stems

7—I alternated my flower type with each line I placed into the foam.

I alternated mums in circles around the floral foam

8—I used mostly mums and then some small round white flowers to trim the top of the “cake”.

The size of the flowers will determine how many you will need

9—I placed more flowers into the foam on the top of the cake, working with one type of flower at a time.

10—I added the unicorn baby’s breath at the top of the cake to create a cake “topper”.

You can add another cake topper (like my Happy Birthday sign I got on Amazon or this cute customizable cake topper letter board from Walmart).

You can also add candles if making this as a birthday cake. It’s great for someone that doesn’t want a real cake, doesn’t like cake, or cannot eat cake.

To water: The foam will stay wet for days. If you want to water it after a few days, just carefully pour a bit of water onto the foam in between the flowers. You can also mist the flowers lightly with a water bottle to keep them fresh.

I kept mine very simple, and it’s exactly how I pictured it in my mind! If you created this project or something similar, let me know in the comments below!
