How to Make Mermaid Hair Clips

While I did love the movie The Little Mermaid while growing up, my love of ocean related things didn’t really happen until I stepped foot on Sanibel Island in Florida. When I first visited Sanibel in 2010, I felt a little bit of magic swimming around the tiny barrier island.

I remember leaving Sanibel to go to Orlando as part of that trip and when I arrived in Orlando, I greatly missed the peaceful beachy town and knew I’d live there one day. And in the year 2020, I moved there.

I put together a whole look for my mermaid crafts

Though I do not believe mermaids exist in real life (well, at least not the ones that exist in mermaid mythology, which you can read about here on Britannica.com), if they did, I believe they’d visit Sanibel Island a lot.

I added rhinestones and pearls to my makeup too!

They’d swim with the many dolphins and manatees that swim along the shorelines, they’d collect seashells and they’d make lots of things from them. I definitely felt the mermaid vibes after my visit in 2010 and started creating many things related to the seashells and mermaids ever since.

I must still be feeling mermaid vibes, which I think is a part of living on an island. Sanibel Island in Florida does have its fair share of tropical vibes, so I suppose I’ll continue feeling inspiration for creating mermaid related things until I move.

I will wear these mermaid hair clips myself as I love them!

While I love Sanibel, we have another life chapter to write in the state of Georgia, in the mountains. Our Hurricane Ian experience was a lot for us to take, and even though our chapter of living on Sanibel will come to an end, I can officially say that I feel I will be an honorary mermaid and will continue to craft many mermaid things the rest of my life.

I added pink and purple eye makeup to coordinate with the clips

These simple mermaid hair clips came about when I received some hair clips from TEMU as part of a brush set. I knew they needed some sparkle added to them, and so I ordered some mermaid colored rhinestones and pearls and set to work. Read on to learn how to make these easy mermaid hair clips. They’d be great craft for a mermaid themed party or for everyday wear as they are super fun and sparkly.

I braided my hair and slept on it to get these mermaid wavy curls

How-To:

1--Clamp the clips onto an old towel or a piece of cardboard. A piece of wax paper will work too. The clip could stick to the towel or cardboard, so if you clamp onto one of those without a layer of wax paper, just be careful how much glue you use.

I usually use Liquid Fusion glue for my rhinestone crafts

2—Add a bit of Liquid Fusion glue to the top of the hair clip and add a resin shell charm

Glue on the flatback rhinestones and pearls a little at a time

3—Add a bit more glue to the clip and start using either your fingers or the wax pencil to grab rhinestones and pearls and add them on top of the glue.

4—Work in small sections by adding some glue, then rhinestones/pearls until you have covered the top of a duck bill clip. Some of mine hung over the edge slightly, which is fine.

I love the colors of these mermaid hair clips

5—Use a pointed cotton swab or a toothpick to clean up any oozy glue.

6—Allow to dry for about 24 hours, then wear and enjoy!
