Our 1800’s home renovation is finally complete! I wrote this short story to describe our renovation path.

The House is Alive (With Memories)
We purchased our Highland’s home in 2008 as a foreclosure. It was sad, dark, and in need of so much love! We saw a diamond in the rough, and dove right in. This would make our 3rd home renovation, but this was our biggest challenge to date.
The house seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as soon as we moved in; as if it chose us to help it.
While working full-time, we worked nights and weekends to restore the home back to it’s original condition as much as possible. The more we worked, the more the house started to feel like a home.
You could almost feel the house start to smile again.
After working tirelessly for years we decided we wanted to start traveling and listed the house for sale in 2018. The renovations were not complete, but we were so, so tired.
Little did we know, the house had a different plan for us.
Within 2 months of the house being listed, we received a contingent offer, but they struggled to sell their home. After 6 months of waiting, we all knew it was time to move in a new direction. We pulled the house off the market and decided to finish the renovations.
The house just wouldn’t let us leave it unfinished!
We dedicated June 2018-February 2019 to completing the house. We were exhausted, but felt it was the right thing to do. It is now finished and we are super proud of what we accomplished. Our travels are calling our name once again and know it is now time for us to let it go.
We are excited to see who this house choses as it’s new owner. It gave us tons of wonderful memories (parties (one of which two of our friends met……and now have three kiddos!), family gatherings, game nights, and more!) and are excited to see who it chooses for it’s next round of memories.
NOTE:
With the help of my husband’s father, we have completed all the renovations ON OUR OWN.
AND FYI—none of us are contractors or have backgrounds in this kind of work. We’ve just researched and learn as we go! You can learn a lot from YouTube too!
