When thinking about adding more high quality materials to your home, I always recommend you think about sustainability, where they were sourced and if they will last before making a purchase. After all, it will be an investment of your hard earned money, so you need to make sure it’s worth it!

Read on to learn more about our favorite seven luxury home materials, how to implement them in your home, and how to make them more affordable.

1- Marble

Marble is adored by many for its shiny white veined appearance. It is commonly used in kitchen countertops and tiles. This material is long-lasting, but can be stained and chipped easily, so you need to treat it with care.

Marble can add value to a home, but comes with a high price tag. Cultured marble is a semi-synthetic option that is a lot cheaper and just as stunning. Materials like quartz can also be engineered to look like marble at a cheaper price.

Here’s an awesome countertop restoration trick we learned when we purchased our home with dull and damaged stone counters. See the video below OR watch it via our YouTube channel “Carolyn Braden”:

2- Granite

Granite is another popular luxury material used in countertops and tiles. It is more durable than marble and can vary in appearance from a mottled pink to white-gray.

Although often lower priced than marble, granite is still not cheap. Cultured granite and quartz can have a similar look and are more affordable.

3- Slate

Slate is another luxury stone material that has a rugged gray appearance. While it may not look quite as gorgeous as marble or granite, it is tougher and more waterproof. It can make a great material on a bathroom floor or kitchen countertop. It’s also one of the most luxurious roofing materials.

Slate is costly, but not as expensive as granite or marble. Concrete can be used to mimic slate’s appearance at a fraction of the price and is similarly durable and waterproof.

4- Silk

Silk is a fabric known for its super softness. It is often used in luxury bedding, curtains and upholstery. It does not wrinkle and is very tough, but can be easily damaged by sunlight or liquids.

Compared to other fabrics, silk is very expensive. You can buy silk with polyester weaved into it to reduce the cost, although this is typically not as soft. Viscose rayon is a relatively cheap synthetic material that can match the softness of silk for those on a budget.

5- Mahogany

Mahogany is a luxury wood that has a unique reddish-brown appearance. It is one of the most durable woods and is also fairly resistant to moisture damage. In homes, it is often used for flooring and furniture such as wardrobes and bed frames.

Due to being difficult to obtain, mahogany is one of the priciest woods. Lookalike woods like red lauan (sometimes referred to as Phillipine mahogany) are slightly cheaper.

6- Black Walnut

Black walnut is another luxury wood used within flooring and furniture. It is prized for its chocolate brown appearance and durability.

This wood is easier to obtain and more sustainable than mahogany, but often even more expensive. Woods like butternut can make a great substitute - although lighter appearance, this wood can be stained to look more like black walnut.

7- Silver

When it comes to luxury metals, silver is the material most commonly found in homes. Silver items like cutlery, candlesticks and plates are known as ‘silverware’ and could help to make your dining room look much more glamorous.

Of course, silver is not cheap - a solid silver cutlery set can cost thousands. Silver plated cutlery is generally more affordable. Silver nickel alloy is also a cheaper alternative - this contains a small amount of silver mixed with nickel.
