How to Make a Steak Cake for Meat and Potato Lovers
My husband loves steak, so I decided to try making him a steak cake for his birthday. It’s a great idea for anyone trying to cut sugar from their diet and anyone that is a meat and potato lover. My version of the steak cake is extremely simple, enough for 2-3 servings and once you make one, I believe you will have many people asking you for one for their birthday too. Read on to learn how to make a steak cake.

What is a Steak Cake?
Basically, a steak cake can be whatever you imagine. You could make a sweet and sugary cake shaped like a steak for a steak-lover in your life, but mine is made up of exactly what it sounds like: STEAK! I iced mine with russet-based truffle oil (a little goes a VERY long way and you can get truffle oil on Amazon and at most grocery stores and I also add it to veggies and fries) mashed potatoes that I made with my own recipe…hopefully I can post that to my website sometimes in the future.

The Steak Cake Inspiration
I saw a steak cake originally on cusocuts website and altered it to fit our dietary needs as well as our budget. We liked the idea of using two filet mignon steaks that cusocuts used, however, our local grocery had organic sirloins on sale (buy one get one pack of two) so we went with that cut. It was also round, so it made sense to test too.

Bacon Rose Décor?
The chef that made the cusocuts steak cake added “bacon roses” (see how to create bacon roses on this website) and balsamic glaze, and while I contemplated adding the glaze, I decided on simple outdoors-y décor (my husband loves the mountains and pine trees) I ordered from Amazon and Temu as well as some rosemary sprigs. I added a cute little canoe too because we plan to move to a neighborhood called Big Canoe in Georgia.

Why Make a Steak Cake?
You can make a steak cake for any occasion. I know it’s starting to trend with kids’ birthdays too. My niece and nephew would have LOVED a steak cake when they were young, but my niece would have required it to be decorated with A-1 sauce as she loved it! Make a steak cake for Father’s Day or whenever you crave adding some creativity to your lunches or dinner food.
I used my cake making background to design and put the steak cake together….so my tips are helpful if you’ve never made a layered cake before.

Now for the cake. Here’s what you need to make my version of the steak cake:
2 round sirloin cuts (ours were 6 oz. each, organic/grass fed, and we got them at Publix and selected the “round-ist” cuts we could find)
Mashed potatoes (I made a batch of my own truffle oil mashed potatoes but you could use this recipe on the Food Network’s site to make something similar)
Mini icing spatula or a blunt knife
Optional: Meat thermometer, Cake décor (I used rosemary sprigs from the grocery, and camping cake décor I found on Temu and on Amazon. Get the cute little mushrooms on Amazon. You can also find some camping cake décor on Walmart’s website), a wood cake plate or stand, a jadeite cake stand, candle, mini gold cake stand

Steak Cake Supplies
How-To:
Cook your steak to the temperature you want. We grilled ours after marinating it with a bit of Liquid Aminos and olive oil. We cooked ours to medium well. Use this article to help you cook yours if you need more guidance.
Make your mashed potatoes. I made mine very smooth by using a bit extra milk after steaming them in my Instant Pot and whipping them with my Kitchen Aid stand mixer, but you could use a hand-held mixer too. I peeled my potatoes too for a smoother finish.
Putting down the “glue”
Once the steak and potatoes are done, place a bit of mashed potatoes on your plate or cake stand. This acts like the “glue” for your cake, and I used this idea when I made fun cakes for weddings, birthdays and more.
The first layer is steak
Use a fork to transfer one cooked steak to the cake stand and place on the mashed potato “glue”.
Next, use your spatula or blunt knife to “ice” the steak, like you would any round cake. Don’t worry about it being perfectly covered, because you can do more icing later.

Then, place the second cooked steak on top of the first layer and ice with more mashed potatoes.

Ice and smooth using your spatula until the steak is covered. It may not be perfect, so you can add some mashed potatoes to sort of even it out wherever it’s needed. I smoothed the top to be even enough for décor.

Then I decorated it with rosemary sprigs, cutting them to fit the height of the steak cake.

Then I added the faux mushrooms and the rest of the décor.
Lastly, we took pictures and my husband used a spatula to transfer it from my fancy cake stands to a plate, and ate half of it. It was still warm due to me working FAST and the mashed potatoes seal in the heat of the cooked steak.
The steak cake looks like a mini sugary cake, but it’s not!
