The Inspiration
I created this Dolly Parton inspired giant butterfly claw clip and knew I’d be able to create many hairstyles using it. It’s a great claw clip because it’s beautiful and being about 5.5 inches, it’s quite a statement hair piece.
You could wear it on a daily basis, for a wedding hairstyle (make them in many colors for a beautiful colorful rainbow wedding), for a festival, for the holidays (think: red and green rhinestones and pearls) or whenever you feel like wearing it. I wear mine to walk my dogs because why not!?
Minnie Pearl inspired the pink color too, as she loves pink (can’t you tell, lol!)
The DIY Giant Butterfly Claw Clip
If you don’t feel like making the sparkling clip, you can still get a jumbo butterfly claw clip here on Amazon and create this hairstyle as it’s truly beautiful on its own. I’ve also included other retailers that sell it in the tutorial below.

Giant Butterfly Claw Clip
Dry Shampoo (I love the plastic free Viori, use my link here to the Viori website or code CAROLYNBRADEN for 10% off any order)
Hair Tie (I used seamless)
Wide Tooth Comb (see my tutorial for my seashell adorned version)
Beachwaver Rotating Curling Wand (or any curling wand you like to use)
Pureology Glow Catcher Oil (I now love this for the best heat protection, tons of lasting hydration and more!)
Optional for flyaways: Beachwaver Braid Balm
Prepping hair with volume, grip and curls
How-To:
I washed my hair with Viori shampoo and conditioner at night, dried it, slept in a satin bonnet and brushed it out in the morning using my UnBrush. I sprinkled some Viori dry shampoo into my roots to add a bit of volume and grip and brushed it through my hair.
Brush through the curls to soften them
Then I added some Pureology Glow Catcher oil to my hair for heat protection. I curled my hair using my Beachwaver.
After the curls were cool, I used a wide tooth comb to brush them out a bit. A wide tooth comb keeps curls looking sleek and softens them a bit.
Adding a bit of volume to my style
I pulled back some hair around my face and sides of my head, teased under it a bit with a teasing brush to add a bit of volume at the top of my head, then slicked it back into a half-up ponytail, securing it with the seamless holder.
This hairspray keeps curls locked in
I added some Braid Balm to tame my flyaways around my face, then added the claw clip around the ponytail holder. You can just use the claw clip, but I wanted mine to stay in my hair all day, so the ponytail helps give it that grip (something to attach to) so it wouldn’t slide out of my hair. Using a ponytail holder with the claw clip is also helpful for people with fine hair types.
I sprayed it with some finishing hairspray and then it was ready to wear all day long!
