My Crafty Inspiration: Demeter
After creating my spring/summer winged Greek goddess hair combs, I decided to make a more fall/winter version. I turned to what I learned in my Greek Mythology class in college and decided to model the new version after Demeter, the goddess of harvest and agriculture. She was known to preside over crops, food, grains and the fertility of the earth.
I wore both, but you can just wear one!
I found a pinecone randomly in my Southwest Florida yard that began my design. The pinecone must have come from some pine straw we put in our yard since we have no pine trees around. I found some dried eucalyptus and oranges in my craft cabinet and my new design began to take shape. As I write this, it’s fall, a time of harvesting, and I am hoping to do some metaphorical harvesting in my life soon, so this craft has a personal connection to me.

Fall Harvesting
A lot of people think that fall is a season when the earth starts to “die” and while this is somewhat true, when things die off, it’s not always a bad thing. With the support of a wonderful therapist, I am allowing many things to “die off” in my life that no longer serve a purpose or things that aren’t good for my well-being. While it’s been somewhat of a painful process, I am still living and breathing and am feeling better with each thing that falls away.
These represent fall harvest and the Goddess Demeter
We harvest many crops in the fall so we can begin again in the spring. If we didn’t harvest, we wouldn’t have enough for the colder winter months and we wouldn’t be able to make room for the new crops to be planted. I am hoping to finally sell my house (it’s time!) so my husband and I can make room for the new adventures and life that awaits us.
Letting go is a part of allowing the new to be born into your life and while I cannot be certain that our next chapter will be “the best”, I do believe that something better awaits us and I’ll wear these anytime I feel doubt. Feeling strong like a Greek goddess is what I aim to do every day when I wake up, and a little glitter and a cute hair piece always gives me a bit more strength. I’m a glitter lover, what can I say, lol!

How to Make DIY Greek Goddess Fall Inspired Hair Combs
Now for the project! Each of mine are slightly different, but similar enough they can be worn together. You can wear one or both! If you are getting married outside, these would be perfect for you!
This is an easy craft that comes together quite quickly but has beautiful results. Buying links below either go out to Walmart, Amazon, Target or Temu:
Dried flower set (Mine was from Temu, but you can source what I used from Amazon here and from here.)
Dual temp hot glue and hot glue gun (here’s a set on Amazon)
Wax tip pencil (Amazon)
Spikes (Also called flatback cone studs or bullet cones, get them on Temu or Amazon)
Flatback rhinestones mix (Amazon, this is the set I used and it comes with glue and a wax pencil)
Gluing the wings on the combs
How To:
Hot glue the wings (I layered the black one, then the silver on top) onto the combs using a LOW temperature to the top of the comb. I also added a bit of hot glue under each to lock them together) I wanted to wear mine on either side of my head, so I made sure to plan out how they would fit into my hair before gluing them onto the comb and I suggest you do the same.
Adding the spikes to cover the holes
I added some hot glue to some spikes and covered the shoelace holes on the wings with them.
Adding rhinestones for shimmering effects
I added some rhinestones to the stitching lines of the wings by adding a line of the Liquid Fusion glue and used a wax tip pencil to apply the rhinestones to the glue. You do not have to add any rhinestones…I just wanted it to sparkle just a bit. A little sparkle is pretty, especially if you will be wearing these outside in the sun. When the sun hits the sparkle, it’s beautiful.
Adding the eucalyptus
I hot glued on the dried flowers to the area around the spikes. Make sure to glue them on the wings, not on the comb so you can still slide them in your hair.
Adding some more dried harvest themed items
I arranged them first, then started layering and gluing until they looked “right”.
Adding rhinestones to the rind
I added some Liquid Fusion glue to some of the dried flowers and around the orange rind and glued on some rhinestones.
The finished look
I allowed them to dry overnight and then wore them in my hair. I curled my hair, twisted back the front pieces and slid them in. You can wear one or both at the same time. They are lightweight and did not hurt my head after wearing them all day, which made me happy!
Each one was slightly different
Overall, I love how they turned out and I’d make more of these. They look pretty in hair half up, but also in up-do’s or braided hairstyles and more. Hair combs stay in most hair styles, but if you have really fine hair, adding a bobby pin or two to the hair comb teeth area while it’s in your hair, is always an option if you are worried about it falling out.
