One thing I know for sure is that super fine hair or thinning hair is something many people of all ages and genders deal with. Whether you have a health issue, a hereditary issue or something else like being faced with extreme stress, hair loss is something many people go through at some point in their lives.
My husband’s fine/thinning hair pre-styling or blow drying
My husband has always had extremely fine hair and as he’s aged, it has gotten even more fine. We came up with some hair styling methods and products that help extend the life of his hair and keep him feeling confident. We even learned about a health issue he had which caused some hair loss. Read on to learn about our favorite fine hair or thinning hair hacks.

You can use one or all of the products we love below to help your fine or thinning hair. I’m a product lover, and when I find things that work for our hair types, they stick around on my product shelves. All the products in this article have been fully tested by us and we’ve used them for a long while. They are all also cruelty-free, so you can feel good in knowing no animals were used for testing the ingredients or final products.
After styling my husband with the products listed in this article
If you have fine or thinning hair, and it’s something new in your life, I encourage you to seek out medical advice. My husband’s hair started getting abnormally very fine in his 30’s, and we linked it to a thyroid issue. He went to the doctor and was put on medication, which was necessary.
His hair ceased the abnormal thinning once the medication was established in his body. Read through this article about hair loss on the Mayo Clinic’s website to learn more about hair loss and get advice on when it may be time to see a doctor.
The back of my husband’s hair post styling
See my 1-minute tutorial for how I style my husband’s hair using some of the products I listed below or via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden:
Laser Hair Growth Caps
A new trend in hair growth is red light laser therapy devices for hair regrowth. We have not tried one of these devices yet, but in reading reviews on Amazon, some people seem to think it’s helped them. If you are interested in laser hair growth therapy, you can read more about it on Healthline’s website, visit a hair growth treatment center, or do some experimenting yourself with an at-home device.

Marc Anthony Grow Long Restoring Anti-Breakage Mask
I actually experienced some loss of hair after having COVID in January 2024. It did grow back after many months, but it was not fun. I created a 1-minute video explaining what I used to help my hair grow back. See it below or via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden:
I received the Marc Anthony Grow Long Restoring Anti-Breakage Mask in an Ipsy bag as a sample and loved how soft it made my hair feel. I had no idea it would be helpful with growing my hair back after COVID, but it did. I have now repurchased it numerous times on Amazon and use it a couple of times a week. My hair has never been as long as it is now. I don’t feel like it thickens my hair, but it does help with breakage, which can help your hair grow better.
Grab a big tub of the mask for about $8.99 at these following retailers:
After blowdrying with Go Big Plumping Hair Treatment spray
Bumble and Bumble Thickening Go Big Plumping Hair Treatment Spray
Before blow drying our hair, we add some of this thickening spray at our roots and it definitely plumps our strands. It’s on the pricy side of beauty at around $33 for a bottle but it lasts for many months as you don’t need much. It’s not greasy, doesn’t smell weird and it’s been the best volume spray I’ve ever used (and I’ve tested a lot!).

Adding dry texture to my husband’s hair with texture spray
Kristen Ess Dry Finish Working Texture Spray
After blow drying my husband’s hair (I’m his daily stylist, lol!), I spray a bit of this texture spray into his hair. It plumps it up a bit and gives his particular hair cut the perfect amount of texture so I can easily style it. It dries quick and has a light scent.
Grab the texture spray at the following retailers for around $15 or less:
The hairline powder instantly adds “hair” color to your scalp and covers gray hair
Boldify Hairline Powder
After texturing my husband’s hair, I add a bit of hairline powder, which acts like an eyeshadow. It fills in any gaps where your hair is fine or thinning and it also can conceal some gray hairs. There are many brands on the market, but we like Boldify because it comes in many colors, is cruelty free, and lasts.
The hairline powder applicator “puff”
Using the hair fibers plumps hair at the scalp
Bolidfy Hair Fibers
If you are looking to add even more volume or a bit of texture with color, we like Bolify’s hair fibers. It acts the same as the hairline powder, but actually has fibers that can bulk up fine or thinning hair. We like Bolidfy because, again, it’s cruelty free and comes in many colors.
I often use two colors to match my husband’s hair, a dark brown and a gray, to make his hair look natural. Prices on this product vary, but usually a tube is around $20 but it lasts several months, depending on how much “filling in” we need to do.

We sometimes mix the Sumotech and the Semisumo
Bumble and Bumble Sumotech and Semisumo
We love Bumble and Bumble styling pastes. We used to use a product called “Dirt” by Jonathan, but when it stopped being manufactured (oh how we miss that perfect almond scented hair paste!), we settled on a Sumotech. We see Dirt is now back on the market (it looks like Johnathan Antin sold his line to a company and it was rebranded via the Dirt website), so we may have to get it to see if it it’s what we always loved.
The Sumotech we currently use has the perfect grip to hold my husband’s short textured hair. Sometimes I mix it with a little Semisumo, which is a bit waxier, has a lighter amount of hold, and adds a bit of shine. I use Semisumo on my hair for shine and to help tame flyaways. Both are around $36, but a tub lasts for months.

The Kristen Ess Hairspray helps hold my husband’s style for sometimes two days!
Kristen Ess Signature Finishing Hairspray
We love the budget friendly Kristen Ess hairspray because it locks hair into place. It’s lightly scented and does what it’s supposed to do: holds hair all day. It also is great for locking all the hair powders on his hair and scalp.
The side view of my husband’s hair post styling
My husband doesn’t like his hair to move, and this hairspray helps him achieve this! It’s around $15 and lasts quite a while, even with the amounts that my husband likes on his hair. If we spray a bit extra, we can get his hair style to last almost 2 days. He loves waking up to good hair as it saves time from needing to be styled every day and it also saves money, since we don’t have to use all the products on his hair every day. This makes them last.
