Red, irritated skin can show up at the worst times—after a long day in the sun, trying new products (this is ME!), or just from everyday sensitivity from hormones, stress and more. The good news? What Causes Redness in the First Place?

I test LOTS of products, and some really do a number on my combination skin (part dry, part oily). Learn your skin type here at the Cleveland Clinic’s website. My skin can get irritated, red, and starts to break out. I have a process I use to get my skin back into shape after this happens. But, before we fix it, let’s keep it real—redness usually comes from:

  • Over-exfoliating or using harsh products

  • Sensitive or reactive skin

  • Dryness and a damaged skin barrier

  • Sun exposure

  • Inflammation (breakouts, irritation, allergies)

The goal: soothe, hydrate, and protect your skin barrier.

How to Reduce Redness Fast for Smooth, Even Skin

Step 1: Cleanse Gently (Never Strip Your Skin)

Start with a cleanser that removes dirt without irritating your skin.

Try this combo:

Hack: Foam your cleanser first using the money saving whip maker—this reduces tugging and helps prevent extra redness and makes your skincare last longer.

See how I use my Marshmallow Whip maker (and what skincare I tested it on) in my short YouTube video below or via my channel @carolynjbraden:

Step 2: Tone to Calm + Balance

Toners can either help or hurt—so choose wisely.

Skincare Routine for Redness That Actually Works

These products help my makeup go on smoothly

Best soothing + glow toners:

  • Pixi Glow Tonic (gentle exfoliation for smoother texture, I use this at night)

  • Pixi Antioxidant Tonic (a soothing toner, I use this in the morning)

  • YSE Your Favorite Ex Exfoliating Pads (great for balancing and calming stressed skin and though you can use daily, I use one a week…and it is AMAZING at reducing redness!). Did you know it’s a myth that you have to scrub your skin to exfoliate it? Gentle exfoliation can occur with products like YSE!

Hack: Apply toner with a soft cotton pad or cotton ball to avoid irritation.

Step 3: Target Redness with Serums

This is where the magic happens—serums deliver active ingredients deep into the skin.

Use:

Hack: Use calming serums (like Dr. Idriss) in the morning and exfoliating ones (like Sunday Riley) at night to avoid overloading your skin.

Sensitive Skin Routine to Reduce Redness Naturally

Moisture…in all forms is important!

Step 4: Lock in Hydration (Barrier = Everything)

A strong skin barrier = less redness.

Gentle moisturizers to try:

Hack: Mist the Pixi SkinTreats between layers of skincare for extra hydration without heaviness and carry it with you to rehydrate as needed throughout the day over makeup.

Step 5: Don’t Skip Eye Care

The under-eye area is thin and prone to redness too.

Use:

Both help hydrate and smooth without irritation.

Freck’s skincare is amazing!

Step 6: Weekly Reset with a Gentle Mask

Exfoliation helps—but overdoing it causes redness. Balance is key.

Go-to mask:

Use 1–2 times per week to gently resurface and improve uneven tone.
