For my husband, Tommy, on his 43rd birthday.
If it weren’t for certain people in my life, I don’t think I would have learned what courage was.
In July, the year 2000, my long time friend, Mike Sturgeon, pushed me over to a table where a super cute guy sat. He was tired of me saying how cute the guy was all night and decided it was up to him to push me into the line of fire called courage.
How in the world could I talk to someone I didn’t know that was surrounded by his friends? Well, that little push threw my comfort zone right out the door. I swallowed the lump in my throat, pulled up my big girl pants and spoke to the cute guy.
“Would you like to dance?” I asked. He said “No.”
Just as I was about to turn and walk my shot down heart away, the cute guy said “I don’t dance, but you can sit down and we can talk.”
The cute guy asked me for my phone number. I gave it to him and he called the very next day.
We went out on a date and saw each other every single day after that. He was fun. He was cute. He was smart. He was someone I could talk to. He quickly became my best friend.
We moved in together within three months and were engaged within 6 months. We waited three years to marry, and tested each other during that period quite often. However, I knew he was my forever friend, my soul mate, if you will. I was very self sufficient and self reliant up until I met him, but I was lonely. I didn’t realize how hard being that way was until I had him in my life.
Ever since Mike pushed me over to Tommy, I’ve realized that courage is what you must summon when you are ready to make a big change in your life. You have to take big risks in order to make great things happen. Courage is hard to find sometimes, but having people like Mike that will push you out of your comfort zone when you need it the most is the best! If you don’t have that person/people in your life, let me be that for you. If you are reading this…..
…..here’s your push.
You are headed in the right direction and it gets easier with each and every step. I promise.
Sending my love and light to all that need it!
