How to Make a 10 Minute DIY Plant Chandelier

Do you have a cute farmhouse vibe in your home and are in need some more creative ideas on how to decorate it? Just add faux or real plants! I created this cool plant chandelier DIY that seriously comes together in 10 minutes. It will look like you spent hours on it though!

Read on to learn how to make this unique plant chandelier.

I purchased a very cool vintage metal sphere from an architectural salvage shop about five years ago. I was drawn to it. It was unique and different, two factors in design that always draw my attention. It was meant to be an outside decoration, but I thought I could do something with it inside my home.

I kept it sitting in a room of my home on the floor and walked past it every day wondering if it should just be a sculptural element or not. Then, about a year later, I started seeing them pop up on Pinterest. People were putting these sculptural metal orbs around chandeliers to update their look.

Knowing we were going to sell our home, I didn’t want to use my metal sphere as part of a light fixture. I knew if I did, I would have to leave it behind with the sale of the house, and I just couldn’t part with my cool vintage treasure.

So, I held onto it just a little while longer. After we moved into a new home, I kept it sitting on the floor of a guest room with a single plant inside. But I decided it needed more; more design, more plants and more attention! I decided it was time figure out what “more” was and get it hung up.

I knew I didn’t need a light inside it. So, I decided on putting a plant inside it. Once I decided to hang a plant inside the ball, I knew it either needed to a be a very large plant to fill the space or I needed multiple plants.  I also knew the plant/s needed to be lightweight, as the ball itself was on the heavy side.

Watch this under a minute video tutorial I created for my YouTube channel “Carolyn Braden” on how to make this plant chandelier project:

I went to Target and found a lightweight faux plant in a hanging basket. One alone was too small, but when I held three together, my plant chandelier idea was perfected.

Even if you can’t find a metal sculpture like mine, you can still make this! I found similar items on Amazon.

Here’s how to make your own DIY Plant Chandelier.

You’ll need the following:

·      22-inch metal sphere (or a similar size) Here’s a set of 3 in different sizes on Amazon. You could use one for this project and then hang the others with plants in them OR put them in your garden. The largest one in the Amazon set is about 11 inches, so you will probably only need one or two plants for one this size)

I cut about three pieces of jute into pieces long enough to string through the baskets and knot at the top. (See the photos in this post for a visual example). I did this to make their original basket strings a little longer which would suspend the plants more into the center of my sphere.

I placed my plants into the metal sphere and set this aside. We measured the corner of the room where we wanted to hang the plant chandelier (ensuring the chandelier would be close to the walls but not touch them). My husband drilled a hole in the ceiling and hung the swag hook using the included anchors.

Please note that my ball already had a chain and loop attached for hanging. If yours does not have this, you can tie a few pieces of jute string to yours as a hanging option.

My husband lifted the ball and plants in the air, hung the plants from the swag hook, then then ball. After it was hung, I reached into the ball and rearranged some of the plant leaves until they looked effortlessly perfect.
