Why We Love The Elderberry Co. For Immune System Boosting
Oh, elderberry syrup. I can’t say enough great things about it! I discovered elderberry syrup many years ago and have always turned to it to help ward off the first signs of sinus issues. We discovered The Elderberry Co. in New Albany, Indiana during our Hurricane Ian evacuation and were very thankful! It helped us not get sick during our time in colder weather. Read on to learn more about why we love The Elderberry Co. for immune system boosting.

Why Elderberries?
Elderberries (Sambucus Nigra) are filled with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system. Elderberry syrup and gummies are now popularly found in many grocery stores, big box stores and more. It’s not just marketing; elderberry is a great little magical fruit!
I’ve ingested elderberry in various forms for years and have had less sinus infections. I used to get them all the time as a teacher (oh those germies in the schools!) and if I was back in a classroom, I’d take some elderberry gummies or syrup every day to help ward off those sickie ickies.
We LOVE Elderberry Co.!
Why Elderberry Co.?
The owner of The Elderberry Co., Jenny Watson, started her company in 2017. I really took note of the brand in 2020. Yes, Covid was running wild, and no elderberry syrup doesn’t cure Covid, but because it can boost your immune system, her product began to sell out and many other people took note of her company too. Though she hasn’t gone through the rigorous process of becoming certified organic yet, she uses organic ingredients to make her products and local raw honey.
We picked up a jar of her elderberry syrup in 2022 when evacuated to my husband’s parents home in Sellersburg Indiana during our 4 month Hurricane Ian evacuation from Sanibel Island Florida. It truly helped our immune systems during the cold winter months that we weren’t quite used to after moving to Florida from Kentucky in 2020. Little did we know that my in-laws would start taking it with us too and now still are elderberry fans!
The Elderberry Co. syrup is sold at her store front at 302 Pearl Street, New Albany, Indiana 47150 but you can get it and more of her products at one of my favorite natural grocery stores, Rainbow Blossom. Jenny also has her products in numerous stores all across the United States and on her website here! You can order the elderberry syrup, gummies, candles, and many other products on her online storefront.

Other Things We Like for Immune System Boosting
Elderberry Syrup: We take this when our allergies flare up, during cold and flu season and more. We alternate between this and echinacea, and sometimes take both when we really don’t feel well. You can make it yourself via Wellness Mama’s recipe or we highly recommend the syrup from The Elderberry Co. It’s made with organic ingredients, very convenient (making the syrup on your own takes some time and is a bit messy) and tastes sweet and delicious.
Echinacea: We take this for seasonal allergy symptoms. We prefer NOW brand and get it on Amazon. We follow the dosage on the bottle. This is tasteless when taken in a capsule and I have not had any aftertastes from taking it.
Buried Treasure ACF Immune Support: THIS STUFF IS GROSS. I mean, really, really gross, but it works. We get ours here on Amazon. I’ve never eaten dirt that I can remember, but it reminds me of dirt or dirty water and looks like it too. It’s packed with elderberries, echinacea and so many other things and when we really think something bad is coming on (worse than what elderberry syrup alone can help with), we hold our breath, take some of this and chase it down with pineapple juice (we tested numerous chasers and pineapple was the best). A neighbor told us about it and warned us of the flavor too, thank goodness. It doesn’t cure, but it boosts my immune system in a big way.
Acerola: We take this when everyone around us is starting to cough and sneeze and come down with a multitude of sinus ear infections, or the flu. You can take it orally via a capsule or via powder (we like this organic one on Amazon), but we like to ingest this in my recipe for Sickies and Ickies and Flu, NO WAY Vitamin C Packed Juice. The taste of acerola reminds me of a tart cherry flavor.

What Does Elderberry Syrup Taste Like?
The wonderful thing about elderberry syrup is that it tastes delicious. The Elderberry Co. sweetens theirs with local raw honey and I swear I could drink a whole jar. It reminds me of a sweet berry flavor. Maybe like if a raspberry and a blueberry were eaten together and flavored more with a touch of honey, ginger, cinnamon and clove…that’s the best way I can describe it. Elderberry juice alone is not sweet.
Elderberry gummies by The Elderberry Co.
Most elderberry syrups have ginger, cinnamon and clove too, making the whole concoction very yummy. It’s so much better than cough syrup! The gummies taste similar. They are kind of like little bites of candy that actually help you! If you are making elderberry syrup on your own like I do sometimes (when I need it quick, I make one that tastes very similar to Jenny’s) I use local raw honey. Using local honey (honey created by bees in your area) can help you with your specific regional allergies if you have many allergies to what you live around.

Can You Take Too Much Elderberry Syrup?
Make sure you watch your littles and fur babies around elderberry syrup because it’s sweet and delicious. I know if my family didn’t watch me around the “pink bubblegum medicine” (amoxicillin), I may have snuck more than I needed. It tasted good! The good news about elderberry syrup is that you cannot overdose on it but it can give you a tummy ache if you take too much. This is like too much of anything, really.
Tommy really had the sniffles in this pic and the syrup helped!
How Much Elderberry Syrup Should I Take?
We take 1 tablespoon of elderberry syrup daily when feeling the icks coming on and you can take it up to 3 times daily. It is recommended to give 1 teaspoon for kids. No babies under 12 months old should take elderberry syrup due to the raw honey in it. Read more about why babies cannot have honey at kidshealth.org.
What elderberries look like
I read on the CDC website about an incident where people found wild elderberries in California and made an elderberry drink with them and got sick. The document said the people didn’t cook the berries. They all recovered quickly, but I must note that you need to COOK THE BERRIES. Also, the roots and leaves have shown toxic results in some animals that ate them. There have been no other reported incidents of elderberry juice poisoning since 1983. So, the lesson? Cook the berries and leave the root and leaves alone.

Can My Dog Have Elderberry Syrup?
Under the care of one of our veterinarians, we gave a ½ teaspoon of elderberry syrup to our pup, Minnie Pearl (she’s 20 lbs.) when she had some allergy problems. The short answer is YES, you can give the syrup to your pup, but talk with your vet for the right dosage. You can also give a tiny amount of honey (like ½ teaspoon) to dogs for coughs, but again, talk to your vet for dosage. Read more about elderberry syrup for pets on the Franklin TN Vet website here.
I truly love Elderberry Co. products!
Elderberry Syrup or Doctor?
In closing, I truly believe in elderberry syrup and many other natural remedies for colds, flus and more. I truly love The Elderberry Co. and think you should check the brand out! I also think you should try to give natural approaches to health care a chance, and then if it’s not working, see a medical professional.
We tried to maintain my husband’s thyroid issues with natural remedies for a while, and it worked, until it didn’t. When his numbers kept getting worse, he did have to go on a medication for his Hashimoto thyroid disease but we help his ease symptoms even more with making better food choices, regular exercise and more.
