How to Dry Your Hair Faster with a T-Shirt or the Conair Twist & Wrap

Many years ago, I started using a 100% cotton tee shirt to wrap my hair before drying it. My hair stylist at the time swore by it as the cotton material absorbs a lot of water, helping you to get your hair dry faster, which can help minimize heat damage from hair dryer use.

Upon his advice, I used a cotton t-shirt, but the longer my hair got, the bigger the tee shirt I needed. And it really didn’t stay on my head well. Then I found the Conair Twist & Wrap and it became my new hair best friend. Read on to learn why and how I use it.

The Conair Twist & Wrap

Cotton vs. Synthetic

I have tested numerous hair towels and hair wraps over the years and the Conair Twist & Wrap is one I hope stays on the market at the affordable $10 Conair price. While a traditional towel can dry your hair well, many are made out of synthetic materials, which don’t absorb as much water as a cotton towel. Many hair towel wraps are also made out of synthetic materials, which again, don’t absorb much water. This is something I’ve tested myself and do notice a big difference when using cotton versus synthetic.

How to Use a Cotton T-Shirt Hair Wrap

The Conair Twist & Wrap is just like the cotton tee shirts I used, being 95% cotton and 5% rayon. I think they blended it with a touch of rayon as rayon adds a silky feel AND give it the slightest bit of stretch. It’s smooth like a tee shirt; basically, a very lightweight cotton jersey that I place my wet hair into and twist, just like I would with a towel. I like it because while it does not have any loops to secure the twisted end, it somehow manages to stay on my head for the 15 minutes (per the package directions) that I leave it on.

It easily stays on my hair, even without a loop or button

During the 15 minutes, the water from my hair is quickly absorbed into the material and I love it. With other towels, my hair always seemed to still be soaking wet after leaving it wrapped for a while, but this one actually absorbs the water. This is important because it takes me much less time to dry my hair with the hair dryer. When you have any length hair, a shorter drying time is helpful and better for your hair as there will be less heat damage.

Great for Curly and Wavy Hair

The package says “Save Your Curls”, and after having curly haired friends, I do know this product would be great for curly or wavy hair too. Most of my curly haired friends had a very extreme regime for their curls and most did not blow dry their hair. I know many would still have dripping wet hair an hour post wash when air drying, so this wrap would help save their shirts from looking like they walked through a sprinkler.

No Mildew Smell

The Conair Twist & Wrap dries quickly, which I also like because it hasn’t started smelling mildew-y like my other hair towel wraps. No matter what environment I’ve lived in, all my hair towels have smelled weird after a few months of use (and frequent washings). My cotton tees and this cotton hair wrap have not smelled, which means no mildew! I think this is because of the material, but also because it’s very lightweight, meaning it dries fast. Because it dries fast, the water doesn’t have time to sit in it and cause the mildewing.

A basic cotton t-shirt can be a great test before you buy a wrap!

Test for Yourself

If you don’t want to buy a cotton hair wrap, try a cotton tee shirt (I’m sure you have one in your closet!) and see if you find it helps absorb more water from your hair. Leave it on your hair for 15 minutes (no rubbing needed as the friction can cause other hair damage and frizz) and see how wet your hair is versus using a traditional blended fabric towel or other towel wrap.
