🚨 Number One: When to Talk to Your Doctor
Before we get into fixes, here’s the most important tip:
If your lips are bleeding, severely cracked, or extremely painful, it’s time to talk to your doctor. This could be more than simple dryness—it may be linked to infections, allergic reactions, or underlying skin conditions that need professional care.
It could even be linked to a medication you are on, so if your lips have been in rough shape no matter what you do, talk to your doctor or see an online clinician like one from Dr. On Demand (I’ve used their services and LOVE it and they have low pricing for those without insurance).
My lips started to get extremely dry every winter when I lived in Kentucky. A lip mask and drinking water was a good trick I used, but this may not work for everyone, so talk to your doctor if my tips do not help.
I LOVE my Corkscicle leak proof products!
💧 Hydration Is Everything
Dry lips often start from within. If you’re not drinking enough water, your lips will show it first. Read this guide by the Mayo Clinic to see approximately how much water may be correct for you.
Make hydration easy (and a little more fun) by using a reliable, leak-proof bottle you’ll actually carry all day. Options like the Corkcicle Sport Canteen or a beautiful Corkcicle Leakproof Cruiser are great for keeping water cold and accessible—plus they’re stylish enough to keep on hand 24/7.
Don’t like to drink water? Try adding fresh fruit or fresh herb infusions using my recipe here or my quick video below via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden:
I love how they both have silicone bottoms (meaning “clink free” set downs on the counters, so no need for a cover!) and when the Cruiser is locked, it won’t leak out through the straw in case it gets knocked over.
Pro tip: Aim for steady hydration throughout the day instead of chugging all at once. Also, NO, sodas don’t count as water….sodas and other acidic beverages can make your lips worse so watch your diet overall for better skin (including lips!) health.
Beauty tip: Hydration can help your lipstick AND your makeup last longer. Beauty starts from within, so hydrate and see an improvement in your lips and your overall skin health.
A budget friendly lip mask favorite I’ve used for years

When your lips are extremely dry, regular balm might not cut it—you need something more intensive. I have discounts!
Try a nourishing lip mask like:
Elizabeth Mott Lip Sleeping Mask (Use code CAROLYN or my discount link for a 20% discount), or grab it on Amazon (no discount though)
MAKE Lip Reset in Lunar Lemonade (but they have other colors and scents)
Make makes a very effective mask…Minnie Pearl is the fluff in the background, lol!
These formulas work overtime to lock in moisture, smooth texture, and restore softness. Use them during the day for a hydration boost or layer them at night for deeper repair.
Dr. Idriss has lots of great skincare product
✨ Night Routine for Seriously Dry Lips
Your nighttime routine is where the magic happens.
Here’s a simple but powerful combo:
Gently exfoliate with Dr. Idriss Barrier Baste Lip Peel — a mild liquid exfoliant that removes dry, flaky skin without being harsh.
Once it dries, seal in moisture with Dr. Idriss Barrier Baste Moisturizing Lip Balm.
This combo helps you wake up with noticeably smoother, softer lips by repairing the barrier overnight. It is truly effective…I tested it numerous times and my lips always look more plump and smooth in the morning.
Daily lip care should be a part of lip health long term!
💄 Everyday Lip Care Staples + Discount Codes
Once your lips start healing, maintaining hydration is key. I have discounts!
For daily use, these are tried-and-true favorites:
Smith’s Rosebud Salve – a classic for a reason, perfect for keeping lips soft all day, funny side note, this was my very first internet purchase and I still buy it today! It’s amazing and smells like roses.
Freck Rich Bi**h Lip Balm – funny name, yet it’s super lightweight, glossy, and very hydrating and gives you a polished look. Use my link or code CAROLYNB15 for 15% off.
Keep one in your bag, one by your bed, and one at your desk—you’ll be more consistent that way. I have lip balms alllll over my house to prevent me from licking them (this makes it worse!).
Loving all these products!
🚫 Common Mistakes That Make Dry Lips Worse
Even the best products won’t work if these habits stick around:
Licking your lips (it actually dries them out more)
Using harsh scrubs too often (liquid exfoliants work so don’t think you have to have grit in an exfoliant)
Ignoring hydration
Skipping SPF on your lips (yes, lips can burn!)…try SUNBUM sunscreen lip balm
💋 Final Thoughts
Healing extremely dry lips doesn’t have to be complicated—but it does require consistency. Focus on hydration, gentle exfoliation, and layering moisture, and you’ll start to see results quickly.
Stick with it, and those cracked, uncomfortable lips will be a thing of the past.
All my loves are cruelty free!
