How to Make a Shirt Collar Necklace Like Emily in Paris Wore

In an episode of Emily in Paris, the costumer had Emily in a collar-like necklace that was bejeweled and just overall super cute. It was simple but unique and elevated her outfit quite a bit. I saw a plain white collar on Temu and decided to create my own version of a shirt-collar necklace. Read on to learn how to make a shirt collar necklace.

Emily In Paris DIY Necklace

My Emily in Paris inspired necklace

The Inspiration: Emily in Paris

The costumer for the show Emily in Paris (such a cute show!) does not shy away from unique fashion or accessories and this is where my inspiration came from. This makes sense considering the show creator also created Sex in the City, which changed the fashion world in a big way and I loved it. Some was a bit risky, but sometimes fashion should be. If all fashion were plain and simple, it’d be boring (to me at least).

If you love Emily in Paris, try my hairstyle idea inspired by the show in my 1-minute video tutorial above or via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden.

Accessories Elevate a Plain Outfit

Accessories can upgrade a plain outfit easily. I paired my shirt collar necklace with an off the shoulder top (Temu), a pair of jeans, a side ponytail and some leopard print heels.

How to Accessorize Jeans

You could also pair a collar necklace with a strapless dress or even a sweatshirt. I even wore it in the plain white version (how it came from Temu) with a plain sweatshirt.

What’s a Dickie?

My collar necklace is kind of like a collar dickie that was very popular years ago and still is. It allows you to have a look of collars and shirts without all the heat involved with layering. Layering clothes is fine, but if you run hot, sometimes a full-on shirt isn’t an option, so faux collars and dickies are helpful in achieving a look without the heat.

Half way through adding rhinestones to the collar

This necklace is a very simple creation that became very glittery and fab. You can make one just like mine or there are many options. You could create one with flatback pearls or rhinestones. You could even put some initials on it. Do what you like and it will turn out perfect!

How-To:

Lay out your collar on a flat surface. I lined mine with wax paper in case the glue oozed to the back of the collar.

Adding the plastic spikes, which are lightweight

I first laid out the spikes to see where I wanted them. Once I decided on placement, I added a dot of glue to each spike and laid them out by hand onto the bottom section of each side of the collar.

Adding the rhinestones to the collar

Next I started adding a thin layer of glue in a small section of the collar and either used my hands (for the larger crystals/pearls) or the wax pencil to grab one and lay it into the glue.

I added lots of rhinestones and pearls to the collar

This process takes time, but it helps you place the crystals and pearls exactly where you want them.

This rhinestone collar would be a fab addition to many outfits

I added rhinestones and pearls to one side of the collar, then I started on the other side.

The completed collar necklace

I let it dry for 24 hours and then it was ready to wear! The spikes gave it a bit of an “edge” but the rhinestones and pearls made it have a beautiful and fancy finish. The photos don’t give it justice…it’s truly a beautiful piece that will elevate many outfits!
