When I travel, I am always looking for ways to pass the time. While reading a book, reading a magazine or writing can be great things to do while traveling, they often make me feel motion sickness. I sometimes can draw in the car, but even that is difficult, especially if the roads are very bumpy. During my last trip, I attempted crafting in the car and it worked! Read on to learn my easy travel craft method, how to make an evil eye claw clip and get more great travel craft ideas!

I recently came up with a great and easy method for crafting in the car. I ordered the following things from Amazon, Temu and more to give myself a flat surface that would help my rhinestones and all my tiny crafting things secure on my lap.

For my travel crafts, I cut a piece of the drawer liner to fit the tray and laid it out to give me a non-slip surface and this worked very well. For a travel crafting session in June of 2024, we drove from Florida to Georgia to do some research on a neighborhood we want to move to. It was a 10-hour drive, and I was able to complete two of the projects on the way there, and one and a half on the way back.

Is It Hard to Craft In The Car?

Crafting in the car does take a little more time than at home, as I have to stop crafting if we are experiencing lots of bumpy roads, or if I need to attend to my pets or my kind husband as he drives. I am so fortunate he loves to drive (and that he’s a great driver) so I can work on my crafts! I only had a couple of rhinestones and pearls flick off my tray somehow, but all-in-all, I crafted in the car quite cleanly.

What Else Can We Do In the Car While Traveling?

When I was a kid, we played a lot of road trip games, travel games and more, but sometimes we needed some quiet time. If I had been allowed to craft in the car, I would have really enjoyed myself. Yes, you can watch movies now days (we didn’t have that option in the 80’s and 90’s) but sometimes that gets boring too. Travel+Leisure has some great ideas for how to have a screen free road trip with kids on their site here if you want to try screen-free thing to do in the car.

Travel Craft Ideas, Tutorials, and Supplies

I laid the lined tray on my lap and in a large mesh bag I packed the following crafting items for my trip in 2024 (links go to Amazon or Walmart):

My completed evil eye claw clip

Evil Eye Claw Clip

For this project, I simply added a bit of glue to the clip and used my wax pencil to pick up the evil eye charms and rhinestones and pearl mix and added them one at a time until it was completely filled.

I also added some evil eyes on the inside of the top of the clip. For all rhinestones and pearl projects, be sure to add a thin layer of glue and if any oozes out, you can use a cotton swab to wipe the excess away.

I worked on one side at a time, and by the time I was ready for the opposite side, the glue had cured enough for me to flip it over gently and work on the other side. I always give my crafts 24 hours to fully dry before using them fully.

The top of the evil eye claw clip

I have been pulled to evil eye symbols since high schol as my friend brought me one back from a trip to Turkey and it intrigued me. She said she thought I needed it for protection, as she knew some things going on in my home life were not so good. It seemed as if I needed that protection again as I crafted this in 2024. Crafting my flower claw clip

Flower Claw Clip

I following the same process for making my flower claw clip as I did for my evil eye clip except I only added pearls and rhinestones to it. I started in the center and then worked my way around. I allowed the first side to slightly dry, took some time to eat lunch, then I worked on the other side.

My pup, Minnie Pearl, loves to travel too!

Jumbo Glasses

As soon as I saw these funny glasses in Walmart, I had to have them. They are giant and fun, and just screamed “bling me up!”. I applied a thin layer of glue, and used a pink and purple mix of rhinestones and pearls to fill up the entire front side of the glasses.

Travel Baby Wipe Container

I am always using baby wipes in some capacity. From helping me wipe away messy fingers while doing my makeup, to using them in the car for my hands or for pet messes, to well, to wipe anything really.

Working on the travel baby wipe container craft

I love The Honest Company wipes as they are great for my sensitive skin, are cruelty free and are fully compostable!

I found a travel baby wipe container and it wasn’t super pretty, so I worked to bling it up. I applied some resin flowers to the front and then some pearls and rhinestones to the lid. I should have stopped there, but I kept going and then ran out of supplies and time.

Half way completed baby wipe container

This project took a lot longer than my other travel crafts, and I had to finish it at home, but it turned out great and was worth it!

Hello Kitty Claw Clip

I created this Hello Kitty inspired DIY project in the car on the way to visit my mom, which is a 2 1/2 hour trip currently. I created it the same as the evil eye claw clip. I attached the rhinestones, pearls, and Hello Kitty flatback charms to the clear claw clip using my wax pencil and the same glue as I used in the other projects.

It took very little time to create and I had it finished before reaching my mom’s house. I added all the charms and rhinestones and pearls to each side, then I also added some on the top of the clip.

I’ve loved Hello Kitty since Tarina Tarantino used the cute cat in her jewelry designs (see some of her HK designs here on her website), and I’m happy with how my clip turned out.
