How to Make a Sequin Butterfly Claw Clip

My sequin butterfly claw clip is an easy 30 minute or less craft that will have you feeling spring before the groundhog! I made this claw clip as part of my “Car Crafting with Carolyn” series on YouTube and it’s now one of my favorites. By adding sequins behind the rhinestones and pearls, it added dimension that made it a unique craft. Read on to learn how to make this cute spring feeling claw clip.

What are Car Crafts?

I started doing car crafts in 2024 as a way to pass time in the car. I love choosing which craft to make in the car. Usually I choose things that are quick and easy and rhinestone crafts are just that. It’s hard to paint and draw and create large things in the car, so I choose things like making claw clips and ornaments. I wear the claw clips in my hair and I hang the ornaments in my house, so nothing I make is useless.

Why a Butterfly?

I’ve always loved butterflies. The whole metamorphosis of going into a cocoon as one thing (a caterpillar) and turning into something else (a butterfly) is fascinating to me. I think both the caterpillar and the butterfly are beautiful creatures, each one serving their purposes in life. Some may consider insects to be pests, but they all truly serve a bigger purpose in life.

A caterpillar’s purpose is to eat and grow strong because they will go out into the world one day and become a butterfly and do great things, like pollinate the world. They are also food sources for other animals. The butterfly serves as a pollinator, helping humans have plants, trees and flowers for oxygen and beauty.

My Own Metamorphosis

I do believe humans go through too and I definitely feel like I’m still in a cocoon phase of life. I was not happy working in a corporate environment and uncharacteristically quit in 2018 after having many long conversations with my husband and therapist. Ever since that year, I’ve felt more like a caterpillar in a cocoon, growing and changing while trying to figure out life and more.

I started writing a creating daily and in thinking about my life now versus my life in 2018 and before, I am much happier. Also, as former art teacher too, I train myself to learn something new every week, and then teach it to others. I hope to do this in a studio space one day, but for now, this space here works and feels safe, like a cocoon.

I do feel the pull to put myself out there in new ways and it’s scary, but doable. I know I can make great things happen for myself and others, and the butterfly is symbolic to me as a reminder to keep going.

I know my sequin butterfly claw clip is just a claw clip, but when I look at it and its spring colors, it brings me happiness and a bit of hope. When I wear it, I feel the metamorphosis phase coming to a close and try my best to fly into a meaningful and purposeful life.

The supplies I used for the butterfly claw clip

How-to:

Apply a thin layer of glue to the butterfly part of the clip. Use tweezers to lay sequins onto the glue one at a time until the butterfly is covered. Allow to dry for a few minutes.

Placing the sequins one at a time with tweezers

Apply small dots of glue in the center of each sequin and use a wax tip pencil to pick up small rhinestones and pearls to lay on the glue. Allow to dry for a few minutes.

The sequins I used were shaped like flowers

Apply a thin layer of glue to the sides of the claw clip and use a wax pencil to add more rhinestones and pearls.

Adding rhinestones and pearls to the sides of the clip

Allow to dry for 24 hours and then wear in your hair. I wore it to pull the sides of my hair back and also added it as an accent in a messy bun “rainy day” hairstyle.
