DIY Pen Featherington Hair Comb Bridgerton Inspired Creation

I absolutely love the Bridgerton series. The colors, the costumes, the wigs, the scenery is all very inspiring to me, a creator that loves fashion, hair, makeup and more. Earlier in 2024, I made a “Something Blue” dried flower comb inspired by my real flower hair comb that I wore in my own wedding. Click here for that project. See my link to the wax seal tutorial (wax seals are all over Bridgerton) at the end of this article.

After seeing how easy they are to create, I made another one inspired by the character Pen Featherington in the Bridgerton series. Here’s to make a DIY Hair Comb.

My completed DIY Flower Hair Comb

If you’ve never watched the Bridgerton series on Netflix nor have read any of the Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn, I recommend it, especially if you loved Downton Abbey. The series is not historically accurate, however, it’s a beautifully written concept of how life should have been and should be, especially when it comes to acceptance of people from all backgrounds. It does have some racy scenes, so keep that in mind if you plan to watch it. It’s like a romance novel, but extremely well-written.

A flower hair comb can be worn in short or long hair

I love all the characters, but truly began to enjoy the Featherington family. If you plan on watching it….spoiler alert! Skip to the project below if you don’t want to know what happens.

Around season 3, I started to fall in love with the Featherington family. The father who gambled away all the family money is killed and the mother is in charge of a failing estate as well as three daughters. They have many struggles and are quite awful for a while, but by season 3, the women agree that they must do better and actually do start to support each other better.

This flower comb would be a great addition to a Bridgerton costume

One of Lady Portia Featherington’s daughters, Pen, is often overlooked and becomes a wall flower that hides at most events, yet she is beautiful, talented and deserving of so much. It’s her neighbor, Colin Bridgerton, that finally gives her a bit of courage to go after what she wants, which is a husband, or at least that’s what she thought.

The colors of my hair comb make me happy

He helps her find a husband (which is ultimately him, whom she’s loved for many years), but he also helps her find herself, which is what her heart truly desired.

This would also make a beautiful wedding hair piece

Pen hides behind her quill pen (she is “Lady Whisledown”, a gossip columnist, that ghost writes town gossip that everyone loves to hate) until the Queen and Colin confront her. During her “growing up” period during seasons 1-3, she changes from wearing mostly yellow (her family color, with the Bridgerton family being blue) to adding more color and shimmer.

Flower hair combs stay in hair very well

I wanted to create a flower comb that shows her growth, incorporating yellow to show her beginnings, yet adding more color and sparkling iridescent bubbles to show her growth.

A hair comb can be dressed up or down

The series is centered on love, which is what I put into all my creations. Allowing yourself to love what you do, love others deeply (even if it means getting hurt sometimes), and feel love for life, is something I wish for everyone to be able to do. It’s human nature. Now for the project.

Bridgerton is definitely inspiring to my creations

How To:

Set out the flowers you want to use. Trim them to fit the comb as needed. I started with a small bunch of dried baby’s breath and started to attach the by wrapping the wire around the flower stems, through the comb “teeth” and around the top of the comb a few times.

Supplies for a dried flower hair comb

You can simply hot glue them on a LOW temperature to the top of the comb, as my florist did for my real flower wedding hair comb, but the wire will ensure they stay put.

Wrapping flowers around a hair comb with floral wire

I wrapped small sections of dried flowers to each of the sides of the comb and trimmed them with scissors as needed. I also cut the floral wire with heavy duty scissors or wire trimmers.

The back of the hair comb

Once each side was “balanced” with the flowers I wanted (taking it slow, understanding balance and having a bit of a creative eye helps….enlist a creative friend with a good eye if you are unsure of this), I then used hot glue on a low temperature to glue some flowers to the comb in the center. These were flowers that would not hold with the wire, like dried daisy-like flowers.

Adding dried eucalyptus to the hair comb

I added some clear bubble beads using hot glue throughout the flower comb. You do not have to add any bubbles…I just wanted it to sparkle just a bit. A little sparkle is pretty, especially if your wedding is outside like mine was. When the sun hits the sparkle, it’s beautiful.

Hot gluing on the flatter flowers

Lastly, I trimmed a piece of felt to match the top of the hair comb (into a little arch shape) and used hot glue on a high temperature to glue it over the back of the comb, on top of the wire. It not only hides the wire, but it also helps the wire not get stuck in a hairstyle.

Adding the “bubbles” to the hair comb with glue

Overall, I love how it turned out and I’d make more of these. They look pretty in hair half up, but also in braided hairstyles and more.

The felt helps conceal the wire

Hair combs stay in most hair styles, but if you have really fine hair, adding a bobby pin or two to the hair comb teeth area while it’s in your hair, is always an option if you are worried about it falling out.
