What Is a Veiled Beanie?

A veiled beanie is a classic knit beanie finished with a soft mesh or netted veil detail. It blends timeless winter warmth with high‑fashion flair, giving your outfit a polished, slightly dramatic edge. Think Parisian street style meets everyday practicality. Or think: WINTER WEDDING…make it in your wedding colors with a different patch and oh it’d be so cute!

The Creative Inspiration

I first saw a veiled beanie in 2013 on music artist Rhianna. Hers was pink with a big veiled bow and had a patch off the side. I saved the image on my Pinterest, and then when I found the perfect patch (many years later), I decided to make my own version in a new way. I also love vintage veiled pillbox style hats and used them as inspiration too.

Why Veiled Beanies Are Trending This Winter

Veiled beanies are everywhere right now—and for good reason:

  • They instantly elevate casual winter outfits

  • They add glamour and interest without extra layering

  • They’re perfect for bad hair days (while still looking put‑together)

  • They transition effortlessly from day to night

Fashion influencers love them because they’re low effort, high impact—the kind of accessory that looks styled even when you’re short on time.

How to Style a Veiled Beanie (Quick & Easy)

You don’t need a full wardrobe overhaul to pull this look off. Here are simple ways to style a veiled beanie for fabulous winter style that actually helps keep you warm! My grandma was right…put on a hat if it’s cold and you’ll stay warmer and the Cleveland Clinic agrees.

1. Casual Chic Errand Look

Pair a black or neutral veiled beanie with:

  • An oversized coat or puffer

  • Straight‑leg jeans or leggings

  • Ankle boots or sneakers

The veil adds polish to an otherwise casual outfit—perfect for coffee runs or school drop‑offs.

2. Cozy Brunch Outfit

Style your veiled beanie with:

  • A wool coat or teddy jacket

  • A monochrome knit set

  • Statement sunglasses

This look photographs beautifully and feels effortless while still being on‑trend.

3. Elevated Evening Winter Look

Yes, you can dress up a beanie, and I’d turn to my loves at Nordstrom Rack for this style. Choose a veiled beanie in black and pair it with:

  • A tailored coat

  • Sleek boots

  • Minimal jewelry

The veil adds subtle drama that makes the outfit feel intentional and fashion‑forward.

Choosing the Right Veiled Beanie

When shopping for the perfect veiled beanie, look for:

  • Soft, breathable knit material

  • A lightweight veil that doesn’t overpower the beanie

  • Neutral colors like black, gray, beige, or camel for maximum versatility

A well‑made veiled beanie should feel comfortable while still holding its shape.

Why This Accessory Is a Winter Must‑Have

If you’re building a winter capsule wardrobe, a veiled beanie earns its place. It’s:

  • Easy to style

  • Warm and functional

  • Trendy without being over‑the‑top

  • Perfect for influencer‑inspired winter outfits

Sometimes the smallest accessory makes the biggest difference—and this one proves it. I wear mine to walk my dogs because why not be fancy whenever you want? LOL!

My Veiled Beanie Tutorial

How to Make a DIY Veiled Beanie

Here’s how I made my veiled beanie. I sewed mine to create it but it still only took me about a half hour to make! You could use hot glue, but just note, it probably won’t hold the veiling on long-term.

how to use a seam ripper in hat making

Seam rippers help get out tough tags and labels

How to:

Step One: I used a seam ripper to remove the brand tag from the front of the hat. Just use the pointy tip and pull out the thread and carefully remove it if desired.

Sewing on the pom pom

Step 2: If your hat doesn’t have a pom pom, thread a needle with matching thread (I pinch the thread in my fingers and then put the needle onto it), double it up and knot it. Then I put the pom pom on the top of the hat and held it on while flipping the hat inside out a bit. Then I stitched from one side of the pom pom to the other until I felt it was secure. I used a thimble if it got tough, then knotted the thread of cut it off.

I figured out placement for the veil

Step 3: I put the hat on my head, then wrapped some veiling around the front to understand size and placement. I cut about 12 inches off the roll, bunched up one end and stitched it to the top of the beanie.

Stitching on the veil

I swept it across the front of the hat and under the hat a bit and stitched it on. I also tacked it down (made small stitches) along the front of the hat to “control” it a bit.

Step 4: I placed the patch on the front of the hat and stitched it on starting from the inside of the hat. It was an iron on patch, but I wanted to hand stitch it so I didn’t mess up the veiling. Then it was ready to wear!

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to elevate your winter style, a veiled beanie is the answer. Cozy, chic, and endlessly wearable, it’s the cold‑weather accessory that turns everyday outfits into effortlessly stylish looks. Once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever did winter without one.
