How To Use Rainbow Hair Extensions

Rainbow hair extensions can be a fantastic way to add a pop of vibrant color to your hairstyle. With the right technique, rainbow hair extensions offer a fun and temporary way to explore your creative side and enhance your overall style. I recently tried adding some to my hair and learned a lot. Read on to learn how to use rainbow hair extensions without the help of a professional.

While we wait for our “rainbows” (it’s been almost 10 months post Hurricane Ian with still no resolution to our house destruction from our insurance company), I’m finding my own rainbows. We hired lawyers to help us with our house and insurance, but I do not need any professionals to help me with my rainbow hair anymore!

Years ago, I had some rainbow hair extensions professionally placed in my hair. They lasted a while, but were a bit of a pain to brush, especially when my hair started growing out. Getting a brush stuck in a hair extension hurts! Now, I just clip some in and they honestly look the exact same as the professional ones did. I’ve used them several ways, but my favorite ways are long and loose and wrapped around a ponytail. I’ll also discuss feed-in rainbow hair extensions, a Topsy Turvy hair tool and more!

Long, loose rainbow hair extensions

Long and Loose Rainbow Hair Extension Style:

To begin, start with clean and dry hair. Take a small section of hair near the root, and gently backcomb it to create a solid foundation for the extension to attach onto. Clip open the hair extension (I used these rainbow clip in extensions), ensuring the clips are secure and ready to attach. Place the extension at the root of the teased section, lining it up with the natural hair. Close the clips securely, making sure they blend seamlessly with your hair.

You can cut the extensions to match your hair length, but I recommend doing this prior to attaching them to your hair to prevent any unwanted real haircuts! Repeat these steps for additional sections, depending on the desired level of color and thickness.

Once all the extensions are in place, gently comb through your hair to blend the natural and synthetic strands. Style your hair as desired, using a straightener or curling iron to create a cohesive and polished look IF they are heat safe. You can buy rainbow hair extensions in curly or straight, so keep that in mind when buying them, especially if they are not heat safe.

Remember to remove the extensions before bed to avoid excessive pulling or tugging to maintain their longevity. You can buy rainbow hair extensions in curly or straight, so keep that in mind when making a purchase, especially if they are not heat safe.

Rainbow wrapped ponytail hairstyle

Rainbow Extension Ponytail Wrap Style:

The rainbow hair extension wrapped ponytail is a vibrant and eye-catching idea that instantly adds a playful touch to any hairstyle. Wrapping a plain ponytail holder with hair is something I learned from my Barbie doll’s hairstyles. I don’t think any of the rubber bands in her hair were ever visible. While you can use your real hair to wrap your ponytail holders (see how I did it in my less than a minute YouTube video by clicking here), using rainbow hair adds a pop of color that people will notice in a good way!

I experimented with my hair half up and half down for this. I pulled the front of my hair back and secured it with a ponytail holder. Behind the ponytail holder, I clipped in a pink and a blue rainbow hair extension, then wrapped the strands around my ponytail holder. I secured the ends with a bobby pin that I tucked into my hair so you wouldn’t see it.

See my YouTube one-minute tutorial for this hair style below or via my channel, @carolynjbraden.

The same technique could be used if you are wrapping a ponytail created with a full head of hair, but you’ll need to hide the clip a bit. For free-flowing rainbow hair extensions in a full ponytail style, you can strategically clip in the extensions first, then pull the hair back into a ponytail. You could also use these rainbow hair extensions that are already attached to a ponytail holder. This would be a great option for a child that wants rainbow hair, but doesn’t like to sit still for very long.

Rainbow extensions can be worn in a pool

If you want to braid rainbow hair extensions into your hair, you could try using the clip-ins or many buy strands without clips for this hair style. You’ll need to “feed in” the hair and this tutorial will show you how. It uses a Topsy Tail (by Conair), which I haven’t experimented with YET, but will soon! If you want to add shimmering extensions, try tinsel rainbow hair extensions.
