Reducing water waste is something that everyone should strive toward. We watch our water use in our household and even my 13 year-old niece is mindful of water usage! Of course, water scarcity is an issue in many countries, but it is so even more during the summer months, and, often, not so far away from our homes.
Now that this issue is becoming more severe and widespread, there is a lot you can do to improve your lifestyle, increase your home’s efficiency, and reduce your water bill cost.
While the measures to take are different for each home and family, here are six simple tips that can help you get started.
Learn About Home Water Usage

The first tip to put in practice to reduce the water wasted and used in your home is to understand the usage extent and the impact that our lifestyle has. Firstly, the average person in the US uses around 142 liters of water per day.
Just flushing the toilet once uses over 1.6 gallons of water - or 2.7 liters! It is easy to feel that we are being conscious about water usage, but the reality is that simple and repeated actions, like flushing the toilet, can severely impact our average water usage.
Monitor Your Habits

If you are trying to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle and cut down on water waste, it is important to monitor your habits. Understanding where you are going wrong and how to improve your habits is the first step to make a change.
Some aspects that you should review include how long your showers are, whether you keep the tap open while brushing your teeth, and how many times you flush your toilet per day. Once you have this data, try to time your shower and reduce the time you are in it, or the number of washing machine loads and toilet flushing.
Address Plumbing Issues Immediately

If you have noticed that some plumbing issues are affecting the safety and comfort of your home, don’t hesitate to address them. A simple dripping faucet can waste over one liter of water per hour, thus adding up to your water usage and utility bills. Some plumbing issues, such as water stains and mold, if unaddressed, can cause structural damages and create an unhealthy living environment.
Engage Your Family

Saving water in your household is not a one-man job! Engaging your whole family - even by creating games and competitions - can help you reduce your water usage and teach your little ones the importance of being mindful of communal resources.
Invest in More Efficient Appliances

If you are updating your bathroom, you should consider investing in water-efficient and energy-efficient appliances and fixtures. For example, modern toilets are designed to reduce the amount of water that is wasted with each flush, and showerheads and faucets have become more efficient. A bathroom or kitchen renovation can help you save money and reduce your water waste.
Consult an Expert Plumber

The best thing you could do to find ways in which you can reduce your water usage is to consult an expert plumber. Through a personalized audit, a plumber can tell you whether there are systematic issues to be addressed and whether certain appliances are using too much water. Leverage their expertise!
