How To Create a Moving Butterfly Hairstyle

An easy and quick way to get attention from your local grocery store customers…wear a moving butterfly in your hair! I found some fun springy butterfly hair clips and know they will be bringing my hair lots of joy to my hair tutorials in the coming years. Here’s my moving butterfly hairstyle ideas using my moving butterfly hair clips.

My glitter hearts hair tutorial was fun to create with some heart barrettes. See it above in my 1-minute video tutorial or via my YouTube channel @carolynjbraden.

The Butterfly Clips

I ordered these metal spring accented butterfly hair clips from Temu. They came in gold and silver and are simple, yet fun because they move! The wings are on springs, so anytime you move your head, they move, which creates some conversations! I wore them in my local grocery store and had several people staring at my head, trying to figure out what was moving.

The finished look

These barrettes would look adorable on many hairstyles, including wedding hairstyles, girls night out hairstyles, prom hairstyles and daily life, like I wear them.

After playing around with them for a while, I came up with a creative way to wear them.

Here’s my moving butterfly hairstyle:

I did this hairstyle on third day hair, meaning I had not washed it for 2 nights. Did you know that “dirty” hair styles better than clean hair? It’s all about the texture….so if you are getting a fancy hairstyle, you don’t have to wash it before getting it done. If your hair is squeeky clean, use a texture spray before styling OR dry shampoo.

I sprinkled my favorite Viori dry shampoo (click this link to get 10% off your order or use my code CAROLYNBRADEN on their site at checkout) at my roots and brushed it out with a Wet Brush. The brushing spreads the dry shampoo out, which you need so it can absorb oil at your roots.

A low ponytail is easy but beautiful

I used a rat tail comb to part my hair on the side, then used it to pull out a small section of hair for braiding. The braid will secure the butterfly clips so that is why I added this!

I braided the small section of hair and secured it with a clear Goody Polyband hair tie. I pulled on the braids a bit to make it look thicker.

I teased the back crown of my head to add a bit of volume, then I pulled all my hair, including the braid into a low side ponytail and secured it with a seamless band.

Then I pulled out a small section of hair from my ponytail and wrapped it around the band. I used my favorite Magic Grip hair pins to secure the hair piece but you can use a bobby pin.

My hair already had some curl in it from the previous day, so I left it. If you want to curl your ponytail, I LOVE my multi barrel Beachwaver.

I then used the GOLD moving butterfly hair clips to accent the braid. The braid gives the clips something to hold onto, and this is especially good to note in case you have vere fine hair.

I love these moving clips!

I cascaded 7 moving butterfly hair clips down the braid and around the ponytail. Then it was done!

You can spray it with hairspray, but I did not to keep the butterflies clean. If using hairspray, use it before you add the clips.
