Vermont Country Store Finds: Tangee + Indian Earth
When I was little, I have such wonderful memories of picking out my future via catalog shopping. My love of catalog shopping comes from my grandmother, my Nani. She got tons of mail order catalogs and they were chock full of the most amazing products that I never saw in local stores. My favorite catalogs were J.C. Penny (I loved picking out and dreaming about my future home furniture!), Harriet Carter, Swiss Colony, and The Vermont Country Store. Read on to learn what I love from the Vermont Country store.

The Vermont Country Store reminds me of a Cracker Barrel gift shop but with beautiful layered cakes and unique beauty products. Every Christmas, my Nani would send friend and family members some Vermont Country store favorites, which included fruit cakes, cheeses, jams and jellies and more.

My Nani knew I loved cakes, and would order me my own box of petit fours, which were simply delicious. I savored the delicate layers of sponge cake, chocolate and creams, each covered in a soft chocolate coating. They were like my little version of sweet, sweet heaven.

While she mostly ordered food from The Vermont Country store, I would dream of the days that I could order as an adult and get whatever I wanted on my own. I loved looking at the beauty products and was always drawn to two main items; The Indian Earth multi use beauty powder and the Tangee lipstick. I had a memory of these items again recently, and finally being an adult, I placed my own order of the two.
Loving Indian Earth multi purpose makeup
The Indian Earth Clay Pot powder is extremely versatile and amazing. While the Vermont Country Store has it, you can also get it on Amazon. If you can only buy one makeup product this year, get this. It is a highly concentrated brownish powder that can be used to contour your face, as a blush, as an eyeshadow and as a lip stain.

I think one little clay pot could be used for all these things for a year without having to buy more. Because it can get a little messy and is slightly concentrated, I first shake the clay pot and remove the cork. I place it onto a damp paper towel to catch any loose powder.

For eyeshadow, I dab an eyeshadow brush onto the cork, then dab it onto the included puff to remove any excess product. Then I sweep it onto my eyelids. At first, it goes on as a dark brown, but when you blend it, it becomes a softer brown. It seems to have a tiny bit of shimmer, but it may not. It’s just what I saw before I blended it.
For contour, I dab a contour brush onto the cork and dab it onto the puff (again, to remove excess product) and run it along my forehead, tops of my cheekbones, and my neck. I then use a fluffier brush to blend. The key to this product is blending. If you don’t blend, it could look spotty.
A simple daily makeup look
For blush, I dab the puff onto my cheeks (when I have used the puff to dab the excess product onto) and blend it well. I dip a lip brush onto the cork and add it to my lips for a neutral lip. I usually top it with a bit of clear gloss (I like Buxom in Dominique or Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme) to add shine.
My results are a bronzed, sunkissed look every time I use it. It says it is for all skin tones and skin types, but the only way to know if it’s right for your skin tone is to try it. The shade is very versatile and may be too much or too little for some, but I liked it. I have freckled medium skin and red hair, and it makes me look like I spent a day at the beach.
I love Tangee lipstick
The next Vermont Country Store product I love is made especially for them. From their exclusive Tangee makeup line, I bought the Tangee lipstick, which is bright orange in the tube, but it claimed to go on clear and transform into a shade that is right for you. It did just this. The product packaging is beautiful and vintage looking, so I knew I’d love it before even using it. The website states that Tangee is also cruelty free, which I love.

With the first swipe, it turned into a beautiful pink that suited my skin perfectly. It is somewhat moisturizing and lasted a day on me, making it kind of like a lip stain. The only time I had to retouch was after eating, but most of it was still on my lips.

The color went beautifully with the Indian Clay pot makeup too. It’s not available anywhere else, but the cruelty free makeup brand Winky Lux makes some similar color transforming lip balms that I love too.

If you love catalog shopping and love beauty products, these are two I’d recommend. If you are shopping from The Vermont Country store (which you can order online from, like I did, though my Nani always mailed them checks), add some of their delicious petit fours, cookies or cheeses to your order. I’ve given the food gifts to many people over the years and they love them. There’s just something special about tiny cheeses and tiny jars of jelly and it makes me smile just thinking about them.
