If you haven’t seen all the rage for the past year or so over the curtain bang trend, here’s your inside scoop. While they have looked fab on so many people on many social media posts I’ve seen, I wondered if they truly would hold up or even look good on my super round, petite face.
While I wasn’t quite brave enough to try curtain bangs on my own hair quite yet, I tried them out via one of my many wigs. Oh, how I love wigs!
Read on to see what I learned and to see if you should try curtain bangs.
What curtain bangs look like when cut
Despite their trending all over current social media, curtain bangs have been around for years. Celebs like Bridget Bardot and Goldie Hawn wore them in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and Goldie still wears them today! They are basically long layers of hair that are cut around your face to frame it. They look like draped open curtains, thus their name.
Styled curtain bangs
To start, I put on my wig and trimmed the front pieces into long bangs. I trimmed them slightly outward with my hair shears. Yes, I own my own shears, and no, I’m not a stylist. I just love hair so much and have learned to cut it via my own hair, my grandmother’s, my mom’s and my husband’s hair for a few years now.
I used a brush to style the long layered bangs into a draping, “curtain” effect, which was very easy. If I had been styling them when wet, I would have used a brush and dryer to help swing them outward.
I was skeptical that they would be flattering on my round, tiny face, but I was pleasantly surprised! The overall look was quite nice and modern. They didn’t quite stay as easily as I would have wanted on their own, but adding some styling paste and hair spray would have helped keep them in place for sure.
Curtain bang fun
I’ve never worn bangs in this way before, and it makes me want to consider it as an option for the future as my hair grows.
If you are considering doing this to your bangs (or having a stylist do them), I suggest you and your stylist watch videos to help make the cut a success. I love watching Briana Cisneros’ Instagram videos and have learned a TON about cutting, dying and styling hair from her. She rocks creating the perfect curtain bang!
Long styled wig with curtain bangs
Due to most curtain bangs being textured and longer, they would be easy to style in different ways in case you got tired of them. I could see them getting in your way as they grow out, so be prepared with some bobby pins or hair clips.
With all that being said, I think if you are considering curtain bangs, go for it! As I always say, it’s just hair. It’ll grow back if you don’t like it.
