☕❤️ Why This DIY Makes the Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

I am always in need of trinket bowls. I love having them around the house to put small things I find on walks or jewelry in them. I have quite a small collection of trinket bowls and boxes! They make great gifts and each one is also a memory sparker of where I got it or when I made it.

✨ Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep Your Coffee Clay

Start with USED and dried coffee grounds—this is key so they don’t stain your clay. But if you want a brown-ish natural color for your clay, experiment and see what you prefer! I wanted the clay to be mostly white, so I used the used coffee grounds.

Mix a small amount of coffee grounds (more or less depending on the look you are going for) into a portion of your Crayola air dry clay, knead it well, and roll it into a smooth ball.

2. Roll Out the Clay

Place the clay ball on plastic wrap and use a rolling pin to flatten it to about ¼ inch thick.

Cutting the bowls

3. Cut Your Heart Shape

Use a large heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out your main bowl shape.

4. Shape the Bowl

Drape plastic wrap over a glass jar, then gently lay your clay heart on top to form a shallow bowl shape.

Let it sit for a couple of hours to begin drying to hold the “bowl” shape.

5. Smooth & Refine

Once slightly firm, remove the clay from the jar.

Use a bit of water and your fingers to smooth out any lines or marks or cracks left from shaping.

The clay I used turns to white when fully dry

6. Add Decorative Heart Detail

Using your coffee clay, cut or shape small hearts to later place in the center of each bowl for a layered, high-end look. I had extra clay, so I cut some smaller hearts to make ornaments, making holes in them with a straw for hanging.

7. Dry Completely

Place everything on wax paper and allow to dry flat. My clay turned white from off-white/gray when fully dry.

Then transfer to a baking rack to finish drying fully. This allows the back side of your clay to fully dry too.

Wiping away the dust

8. Clean & Prep for Sealing

Wipe away any clay dust using a damp paper towel, then let dry again. This also gets those coffee pieces to show up more clearly.

Spray with sealant or seal with liquid resin

9. Seal for a High-End Finish

Place bowls on wax paper and cardboard, then spray with an acrylic sealant outdoors for proper ventilation.

💡 Optional: Brush on resin + UV light if you want a more durable, glossy finish.

10. Assemble

Glue the small heart into the center of each trinket bowl and let dry completely.

💡 Bonus DIY Idea

Use your extra clay to create a matching heart ornament—perfect for gifting alongside the bowl or tying onto a gift bag for an extra special touch.
