🌿 What Is a Kenzan? (And Why It’s So Cool)
A kenzan is a small weighted base with upright metal pins used to hold flower stems in place. It’s commonly used in Ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arranging that emphasizes minimalism, balance, and natural beauty.
Unlike traditional foam, a kenzan allows flowers to stay fresh longer and gives your arrangement a clean, modern look. It also is great for spaces that don’t have room for something like, say, a large bouquet of hydrangeas. It’s a simple, modern way to display florals and more in beautiful way.

I took the idea of using a kenzan and Ikebana to create a simple but budget friendly floral arrangement in a mug. Yes, you could just cut the flowers and put them in the mug, but using a kenzan gives your bouquet a bit more height and creativity in your display.

Use odd numbers of stems for a more natural feel

💐 What You’ll Need (the flowers and the mug were under $10, but the kenzan will cost a tiny bit more, depending on whether you select a metal one or a plastic flower frog)
A kenzan (flower frog / pin frog)—make sure it will fit in your mug
A personalized mug or just a beautiful mug or container like this
A $5 grocery store bouquet (I LOVE Trader Joe’s Unicorn Bouquets…they’d be perfect for this project!)
Water
Optional: floral putty (for extra stability)

☕ Step 1: Start with a Personalized Mug
I ordered my personalized photo mug for just $5 from CVS Photo, which runs sales on personalized photo gifts all the time. Even better—I used their same-day photo pickup, making this a super quick gift idea!
This adds a meaningful, custom touch that makes your floral arrangement feel extra special.

🌼 Step 2: Add the Kenzan
Place your metal and rubber kenzan directly into the bottom of the mug.
👉 Tip:
If your kenzan isn’t very heavy, use floral putty to secure it in place. This prevents shifting and keeps your arrangement stable—especially important when transporting or gifting.
Try adding a single flower like a red rose!
✂️ Step 3: Trim and Arrange Your Flowers
Take your $5 bouquet and:
Trim stems at an angle
Remove excess leaves
Start inserting stems into the kenzan pins
Because the kenzan holds each stem in place, you can design your arrangement exactly how you want—no florist skills required!
Build your arrangement slowly until it looks balanced, full, and visually pleasing.
Add greenery if desired
💧 Step 4: Add Water
Once your flowers are arranged, carefully fill the mug with water—just enough to cover the base of the stems.
Your arrangement will stay fresh while maintaining its shape beautifully.
