Why Junk Trucker Hats Are Trending

DIY junk trucker hats have become a huge fashion trend thanks to their handmade, eclectic look. They mix boho fashion, western glam, vintage patches, and custom embellishments into wearable art.

🦚 Peacock designs are especially popular because the feathers and colors add dramatic flair and a fun maximalist vibe. I’ve always loved peacocks and their bold colors (and strong attitude) and this design was inspired by this. I created it with spikes to show the boldness of this beautiful bird. They are beautiful and regal, but they WILL come after you, tail up, if you threaten them. I like how they stand up for themselves.

I love how it turned out…it’s bold!

The metallic paint adds glam while the neon tones keep it playful. I paired my hat with a pink bathing suit for pool, beach or lake days and distressed overalls and a leopard bodysuit for shopping or eating out.

How to Make a Painted Peacock Patch Junk Trucker Hat

Step 1: Prep Your Trucker Hat

Lay your trucker hat on a flat surface and decide where you want your peacock patch placed. Most people center the patch on the front panel, but asymmetrical placement with perhaps other patches can give it an even more vintage junk hat aesthetic.

If needed, wipe the surface clean before painting.

Go slow, adding paint layers a little at a time

Step 2: Paint the Hat

Pour your acrylic paints into a paint tray. I used metallic color shift white, silver and blues and greens to create a bright boho look with a little glam. I painted some details on in the beginning and then later after adding some embellishments until I felt it looked finished.

Use a dry brush technique around the edges and brim to create texture and dimension. Layering colors gives the hat that distressed boutique-style finish that makes junk trucker hats so popular.

I added streaks that reminded me of feathers

Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on. I also added a bit of pink paint to my patch, as the “feathers” of the peacock had orange on them, but I wanted pink.

Prepping to braid the bandanas

Step 3: Braid your bandanas and attach

I cut, then ripped a strip from three colors of bandanas. Each strip was about 3 inches in width.

Braiding the bandana strips

I loosely braided them all together, then tied off the ends, trimming as needed.

I stitched on my bandana braid

I used a needle and thread to stitch it onto my hat, but you can alternatively hot glue it on.

Hot glue or iron on your patch

Step 4: Attach the Peacock Patch

Once the paint is dry, use your dual temp hot glue gun to attach the peacock patch securely to the hat. If your patch is iron-on, you could do that instead.

Press firmly for several seconds so the patch stays in place.

Adding the spikes

Step 5: Add Embellishments

Now for the fun part — decorating! Add plastic spikes, rhinestones, studs, or any embellishments you love around the patch or brim.

This is where you can really personalize your DIY trucker hat and create a unique boho western accessory. I cut some spikes off the strips I had on hand, and added them with the Aleene’s Jewel-It (it’s best for fabric, like my hat was).
