How to Make Greek Goddess Hair Combs
Upon wakening recently, I had a thought about the Greek goddess Athena. I always loved Greek Mythology in grade school and even took a class in college about Greek gods and goddesses.
The same week I dreamed about Athena, I had some angel wings fall out of a bag in my closet (I wondered where they went!) and knowing Athena is the goddess of crafting, I knew exactly what to make with the wings as I didn’t love them on my shoes. Read on to learn how to make Greek goddess hair combs.

Athena and her spirit must have needed to have a voice right now and she found it in me. I think about spirituality a lot and between animal totems, signs, prayer visions and more, I usually gain some inspiration for my art through them. I plan to make more wing hair combs to represent other Greek goddesses, but for now, Athena is my inspiration. She is the goddess of Crafts, Wisdom and War.

I currently most relate to her spirit because she is known as the patron goddess of household crafts and I work on those a lot! Crafting has always been a part of my life. When I can take a bunch of things and put them together in a beautiful way, it makes any sadness that I may feel dissipate like magic. There’s something about working with your hands that can help clear away cloudy days. From gardening to cooking to crafting and more, it helps. Read more about it here on Psychology Today’s website.

I also love her wisdom connection and believe I have earned quite a lot of wisdom through my life experiences. From being kicked out of the house at age 17, to losing my true mother and best friend in my 20’s (my Nani, my maternal grandma), from moving to a new state (Sanibel Island, Florida, a dream come true) and then it getting hit by one of the worst hurricanes in Florida history (Hurricane Ian, definitely not a part of my dream) and more, wisdom has been a result and it carries me on day after day.

Her “wise owl” symbolism rings true in my life too as I keep seeing a tiny owl while walking my dogs in the evening. My husband and I named her Elvira and you can see her below in our short YouTube video:
Athena, The Goddess of War
Her warfare tactic is also something I resonate with. She is known for her strategic skills. Instead of just lashing out in anger, she pulls back when faced with opposition, figures out the best move, and then strikes in a way in which is calculated and strong. My husband said these combs reminded him of Wonder Woman, and I agree, as her characteristics are inspired by many greek goddesses.

Many people struggle with lashing out when provoked, and while I may have in my younger years (when I allowed people to get under my skin too easily), I now believe in using strong but peaceful strategies when dealing with difficult situations.

I often read pages from the book Warrior of Light by Paulo Coelho and Athena reminds me of the warrior in the book (I definitely recommend reading it!). You can fight for what you believe in, but having a light-filled strategy is what can put you in a better position for victorious results.
Athena is known to invent the olive tree, which is used as a symbol for peace and I love having peace in my life and choose it as often as I can. Read more about Athena (also known as Athene or Pallas) here.

Dried flower set (I got my strawflowers at a grocery store as they dry nicely without any work, but Amazon has a similar set here)

How To:
Hot glue the wings onto the combs using a LOW temperature to the top of the comb. I wanted to wear mine on either side of my head, so I made sure to plan out how they would fit into my hair before gluing them onto the comb and I suggest you do the same.

I added some hot glue to some spikes and covered the shoelace holes on the wings with them.

I hot glued on four dried flower buds in front of the spikes.

I tried to select smaller flowers so they wouldn’t fully cover the spikes on the shoelace holes.

I hot glued some spikes into the center of each flower.
Adding the rhinestones
I added some rhinestones to the stitching lines of the wings by adding a line of the Liquid Fusion glue and used a wax tip pencil to apply the rhinestones to the glue. You do not have to add any rhinestones…I just wanted it to sparkle just a bit. A little sparkle is pretty, especially if you will be wearing these outside in the sun. When the sun hits the sparkle, it’s beautiful.
I adore the “after” look with these hair combs!
I allowed them to dry overnight and then wore them in my hair. I French braided the front sections of my hair back (a half-up hairstyle) and then wiggled the combs into the braids. I sprayed some of my moisturizing sea salt spray to add some texture to my hair and added a black romper and heels and I was ready to dance! They are lightweight and did not hurt my head after wearing them all day, which made me happy!

Overall, I love how they turned out and I’d make more of these. They look pretty in hair half up, but also in up-do’s or braided hairstyles and more. Hair combs stay in most hair styles, but if you have really fine hair, adding a bobby pin or two to the hair comb teeth area while it’s in your hair, is always an option if you are worried about it falling out.
