Styling Tips for Maximum Impact
Choose a warm white bulb for cozy ambiance
Match the basket color to pillows or artwork nearby
Use two matching basket lamps for symmetry
Try this DIY in a kid’s room for playful lighting
Because the tulip basket comes in multiple colors, you can switch up the vibe easily — pastel for spring, bold for summer, neutral for year-round decor.
Why This DIY Lamp Is So Popular
Basket lighting adds texture, warmth, and softness to a room. Designer woven pendants can cost hundreds of dollars — but this DIY version delivers a similar aesthetic for a fraction of the price.
It’s proof that you don’t need expensive lighting to create a high-end look.
And since you can use any basket, you can customize this project to fit farmhouse, boho, modern, or eclectic styles.

Links go out to either the brand website, Amazon, CVS, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, or Lowe’s where we source our supplies based on discounts, budget and pricing.
A tulip basket (mine is rattan and from Target, but any sturdy basket works, the dimensions of my basket are Dimensions (Overall): 8 Inches (H) x 11 Inches (W) x 11 Inches (D)
A plug-in lamp base or lamp cord kit
A light bulb (choose one that is suitable for the lamp kit, I got mine here at Lowe’s)
Wood “Feet” (I used 1 ½ in x ½ inch wood wheels)
Optional: Felt pads
Optional: Command hooks or ceiling hook (if hanging)
That’s it!
How to Make a DIY Tulip Basket Lamp (Step-by-Step)
1. Choose Your Basket
I used a tulip-shaped basket from Target that comes in several fun colors. The floral design gives it a cheerful, spring-inspired vibe.
But don’t worry if you can’t find the same one — woven baskets, wire baskets, thrifted baskets, or even storage baskets can all work beautifully. A good wicker, rattan or water hyacinth basket will give you a great sturdy lamp.
This Walmart bunny basket would be cute too! Ones that have some gaps in them work great so you don’t have to cut anything on the basket. The tulip “petals” provided the perfect space for running the lamp cord through.
If your basket doesn’t have anywhere for the cord to run through, use some scissors or a utility knife to carefully cut a small hole in the basket to run the cord through.
I added felt pads after this step of gluing on the feet
2. Add some “Feet”
I used some hot glue on a low temperature setting to attach the wood feet to the bottom of my basket. I placed them on a counter first, then put the basket on top first to see which formation would help balance my basket flat. I glued them onto the bottom of the basket in that same way.
I added some felt pads (mine were sticky on the back) to the wood feet so they would not scratch my table.
Adding the lamp kit
3. Insert the Light Kit
Thread your plug-in pendant light cord through the bottom or center of the basket. I was able to thread my cord around the tulip basket “petals” easily. Many baskets already have small openings that make this easy. When buying your lamp base, make sure it will fit in the bottom of the basket. My light base was 5.1”w X 3.7”h, which fit the width and height (with the bulb) of the basket perfectly.
If your basket doesn’t have an opening, you can gently create one using scissors or a small tool. Buy a pendant light kit if hanging your basket lamp.
Let there be light!
4. Secure the Bulb
Attach your bulb to the socket. LED bulbs are ideal because they stay cool and are energy-efficient. We have some color change smart bulbs in our home and with app control, this could be helpful if you want to change lighting colors!
I love the light it brings to the corner of my bedroom
5. Style It
You can:
Place it on a table like I did to create a whimsical table lamp look
Hang it from the ceiling with a hook
Mount it using a wall hook
Plug it in — and enjoy your cheerful new light!
