Creating a Modern Feathered Cut Farrah Fawcett Layered Hairstyle

The longer my rose gold hair gets, the more I love it. I’ve been growing it out since 2020, getting trims and coloring as needed. I’ve had rose gold hair for over a year now and LOVE it. I also have loved having some layers in my hair, which to me, resembles a modernized version of the very popular Farrah Fawcett hairstyle. Read on to see how I create it and what to ask for at the salon if you want this easy hairstyle.

I got this shirt for a character I created, but I like to wear it too!

My Outfit Seen In this Article

Here only for the outfit deets? It was inspired by the outfit Janet Jackson wore in her music video Pleasure Principle. See the video here on YouTube or below:

I have on a Y’ALL shirt from Amazon (I’m originally from Kentucky and ordered a men’s small because I like the men fit best in many tees), I cinched it with a Cinch-It (see my article on how to use the Cinch-It here), a vintage belt buckle and leather belt I had made for it at The Leatherhead in Louisville, KY, Adidas Sambas I painted with leather paints years ago (I use Angelus Leather Paint), and my gray Joe’s Jeans.

See all my Amazon favorites here in my Amazon Shop.

What is the Farrah Fawcett Hairstyle Called?

Similar to the popular 1990’s-2000’s Friends television show “The Rachael” haircut (see it here…and I even got the layered haircut in high school after seeing Jennifer Aniston with it!), Farrah Fawcett also had a trending haircut in the 1970’s.

Farrah Fawcett, an actress widely known for her work on the show Charlie’s Angels and for her iconic red swimsuit poster, had what was called a “feathered cut”. Her hair was past her shoulders, had some short, medium and long layers (especially around her face) and had shorter pieces in the front of her forehead that could be called “bangs”. Read more about it here on the Stylist website.

The Modern Farrah Fawcett

While I appreciate all the bounce in Farrah’s feathered cut, I don’t feel like putting it up in Velcro rollers or large magnetic rollers every day, so, I call mine the “modern” Farrah cut. I also don’t really technically currently have “feathered ends”, but I am able to style it to look that way. Every other month or so, my stylist shortens up the soft, face framing layers in my rose gold hair.

My hair is more rose gold right after I get it colored, then it slightly fades

Similar to Farrah’s 70’s haircut, my stylist puts varying layers around my face and around the back of my head. I thought about getting the much shorter pieces around my forehead like Farrah, but with all the sweating I do in SWFL and the humidity, I opted for a few short layers around my forehead.

How I Style My Layered Cut

For my daily layered hairstyle, I usually use on the of the wands on my Beachwaver multi barrel tool to curl my hair AWAY from my face. I used the largest barrel wand when styling my hair for this article. I spray Bumble and Bumble Heat Shield (Sephora) on it first for heat protection.

I curl AWAY from my face for this look

When I want it to be bigger like Farrah’s iconic hair, I fluff it up with my fingers at the crown. I’ll sometimes use a bit of Viori Coconut Vanilla dry shampoo (use my link here for a 10% discount) at my roots to add the texture to hold the “lift” and to soak up hair oils. I also like Not Your Mother’s dry shampoo and get a BIG bottle of it at Walmart.

how to get more volume in your hair

Adding volume is as easy as using your fingers!

If that’s not enough volume for me, I will use a teasing brush to tease the hair around my head at the top/crown.

using texture paste for layered hair

I like to add texture to my hair with various texture pastes

Then, I like to add some texture paste (only a tiny bit!). I put a pea sized amount (I like the Dirt brand, but if it is out of stock, I will use Bumble and Bumble Sumo or Semi Sumo from Sephora) in between my fingers, rub it into my hands and apply it in quick motions around my head onto the layers.  I push the front sections of my hair towards my face when adding the product too.

My hairspray shield is very inexpensive

Lastly, I’ll use a hairspray shield for my face (I don’t want to get it all over my makeup and skin as it can be drying) and use Kristin Ess Finishing hairspray (cruelty free and budget friendly…get it at like I do at Target or Amazon) to spray my hair a bit all over. I don’t like a lot of product on my hair as I only wash it about every three days mostly with Viori shampoos.

rose gold hair maintenance

I maintain my rose gold hair at home, but a stylist does the heavy work!
