How to Make the Cutest Bandana Patchwork American Flag Tank Top

Looking for a fun patriotic DIY that's cute, unique, and easy to customize? This Bandana Patchwork American Flag Tank Top is one of my favorite projects I've made in a long time! I actually created it to match the adorable patchwork shorts I found at Target (buying link in my article below) and together they make the cutest summer outfit.

Whether you're celebrating Independence Day (Fourth of July), Memorial Day, Labor Day, a summer concert, a country music festival, or just love Americana style, this DIY is a fun way to create a one-of-a-kind piece that no one else will have.

The best part? You don't have to be an experienced sewer to make it! If sewing isn't your thing, you can use iron-on hem tape instead. I'll also link my tutorial that shows exactly how to use hem tape if you're new to it.

Let's get started!

How to Style Your DIY American Flag Tank Top

I made this tank specifically to wear with the matching patchwork shorts from Target and I absolutely love the coordinated look.

You could also style it with:

  • Blue jeans (I have these jeans by RUTI and they are slouchy and perfect for this tank!)

  • Denim shorts (these shorts by Genleck are super cute and the new take on the waist is on trend!)

  • White jeans

  • A jean skirt

  • Layered under a denim jacket

  • Over a swimsuit for the beach

For shoes, I paired mine with my favorite square-toed TKEES flip-flops, which keep the outfit casual and summery.

Supplies You'll Need

Optional: You can also hand sew everything using this sewing kit I have if you don't have a sewing machine.

DIY Bandana Patchwork Shirt for the Fourth of July

Cutting then ripping the bandanas

Step 1: Create the Flag Pieces

To give the flag a soft vintage patchwork look, I mixed different fabrics and textures together.

For the blue section of the American flag, I used two different blue bandanas. I first began to cut the bandanas into rectangles and then ripped the edges the rest of the way by hand. Ripping fabric instead of perfectly cutting every edge gives it that perfectly imperfect farmhouse-inspired patchwork look.

I layered the two blue rectangles together for extra texture.

Next, I cut and ripped strips from pink and red bandanas for the red stripes.

Instead of using white fabric for the white stripes, I chose 1.57-inch-wide cotton eyelet lace trim ribbon. I absolutely love the feminine vintage look it gives the finished flag.

Sewing the bandana “patches” together

Step 2: Lay Everything Out

Before sewing anything together, I laid every piece directly onto the front of my tank top.

This helped me decide on the spacing, stripe placement, and overall shape of the American flag before attaching anything permanently.

I highly recommend taking a picture like I did once you're happy with the layout. It makes putting everything back together much easier.

Don’t sew? Use hem tape! It may not last as long but it will give you a cute shirt for the event you need it for.

Step 3: Assemble the Patchwork Pieces

Once I loved the layout, I removed the pieces and began sewing them together.

First, I stitched the layered blue bandana rectangles together.

Then I stitched together each of the pink and red bandana strips to create the striped portion of the flag.

Don't sew?

You can absolutely skip the sewing machine for this part and instead fuse the fabric pieces together with iron-on hem tape. I have a full tutorial showing exactly how to use hem tape for fabric projects here.

Step 4: Attach Everything to the Tank Top

Once the flag pieces were assembled, I placed everything back onto the tank top.

Using straight pins, I pinned the blue section, red stripes, and eyelet lace trim directly onto the shirt.

Stitching it all onto the tank

Then I used white thread in my sewing machine to stitch everything onto the tank top.

If you don't own a sewing machine, you could also hand sew everything into place or use that hem tape to quickly attach it all to the tank, cutting hem tape to fit each piece of fabric, then fuse it together with the iron.

My Finished Tank Top

Confession time...

I hadn't used my sewing machine in almost four years!

Was every stitch perfect?

Definitely not.

Did it turn out adorable anyway?

Absolutely!

The slightly ruffled edges and imperfect stitching actually give it even more vintage charm. Sometimes handmade projects are even cuter when they aren't perfectly perfect.

Final Thoughts

I love DIY projects that combine affordable supplies with a little creativity, and this Bandana Patchwork American Flag Tank Top checks every box. It has a relaxed vintage vibe, looks adorable with denim, and perfectly matches my Target patchwork shorts.

Whether you sew everything together, hand stitch it, or use iron-on hem tape, you'll end up with a unique patriotic piece that's full of personality—and that's my favorite kind of DIY.
