How to Make Rhinestone and Spike Hair Combs
When I saw Kelly Osbourne wearing a pair of studded hair combs in her hair in a photo from 2013, I thought they were cool and hip and super functional.
Not only do hair combs keep fallen pieces of hair in your up-do off your neck, they are super cute and a very easy craft to make. Hair combs are great for everyday wear and I even wore a flower hair comb in my wedding. Read on to learn how to make rhinestone and spike hair combs.
Styling overalls from summer to fall
The Fashion
If you are here for the fashion/overall looks I made to go with this craft, you can get my outfit here in my Amazon Shop. I thought about styling overalls from late summer into fall using a bright colored hoodie that matched the rhinestone colors on one of my hair combs. If you are here for the craft tutorial, read on.
You can combine the spikes and rhinestones for a soft and hard look
Soft and Hard
Using inspiration from Kelly Osbornes’ spike adorned hair combs, I decided to make mine a bit different by including the hardness of the spikes with the softness of a glittering jumbo rhinestone. I ended up making four, two in gold tones and two in silver tones that can be worn in hair in many different ways.
One hair comb alone works well too!

The Osbourne Family
After the passing of her father, Ozzy Osbourne in 2025, I figured now was the time to pay tribute to the family that made me laugh and cry for several years. I watched their reality show, The Osbournes (2002-2005) and in watching them, you could see that their family is a wonderful mix of soft and hard, with love and caring being at the center of their core values.
Hair combs help hold up loose hair pieces in up-do hairstyles
How to Wear Hair Combs
I wore my rhinestone and spike hair combs in several ways. One great way is to wear them at the back of a messy bun up-do hairstyle. They help hold up some shorter hair pieces.
Wearing them in a messy bun hairstyle
You can also wear them as a mini “tiara” in a half up-hairstyle or in the messy bun hairstyle.
Wear one at the front of a hairstyle too
I also liked wearing them on the side of my head in a low ponytail or a longer curled hairstyle.
They can amp up simple hairstyles
Any way you wear them, the spikes and rhinestones amp up any hairstyle.

Flatback acrylic spikes for crafting (Get a set of mixed colors of 300 on Amazon for around $6 or get them on Temu)
Hair Combs (Get a big set on Amazon or get some neutral colored ones from Temu)
Hot glue or Liquid Fusion glue (I LOVE my rechargeable and cordless hot glue gun set from Amazon and also love Liquid Fusion from Walmart if I’m not in a hurry to get my craft done)

My completed hair combs
How to:
Figure out the arrangement of your rhinestones. I laid mine out in front of the hair comb to understand how many I’d need and for an idea of what colors/shapes I would use.
Adding the rhinestones to one hair comb
Next, I applied a bit of hot glue to the hair comb (a low temp is fine) and began adding the rhinestones.
Making the spike adorned hair combs
Repeat the gluing on a second hair comb with the spikes. I will say, hot glue MAY NOT give you enough hold. Mine stayed on and then I dropped one on a hard wood floor and a few of the spikes popped off. I glued the right back, but if you have time, Liquid Fusion could be a better glue to use as I use it on many of my rhinestone crafts.
The finished hair combs
Then they were done! If using Liquid Fusion or another glue other than hot glue, give them about 24 hours to dry. If using hot glue, let them cool and you can start wearing them right away!
