I came across figs a few years ago and decided to try them. After cutting one open and tasting it’s delicate sweetness, I was filled with inspiration. What Are Figs?

A fig is a flowering plant in the mulberry family. It is native to the Middle East and Western Asia. There are many varieties of figs. Some ripen to be more of a purple-brown shade, while others remain more greenish.

What Do Figs Taste Like?

A ripe fig has a bit of a squishy texture with very small seeds. It should be eaten very quickly after purchasing (like an avocado). They should be stored in the refrigerator or a very cool location.

The taste and texture of a fig is similar to a plum or strawberry without the tang. It is sweet and often served in salads and desserts. You can eat them with the skin on (no need to peel).

How Should I Serve Figs?

I cut mine in half and dipped them in chocolate with some pistachios. They are the perfect and easy dessert that will impress your foodie (or non-foodie) friends. I think they’d be great adorning a charcuterie board (they are beautiful!) or just simply eaten as a light snack. The Food Network put together a list of 18 fig recipes that look delicious and you can check them out on their website here.

Time to Put This Recipe Creation Together: 15-30 minutes

Servings: 3-4

Things You Need:

  • 8-10 ripe figs (see the recipe notes section below to see where I find them and what time of year)

  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips (I used Enjoy Life Mini Chips, buy them on Amazon here or at Walmart here)

  • Coconut Oil (I used Expeller Pressed Refined Coconut Oil, Buy it at Amazon here or at Walmart here)

  • Optional but recommended: Pistachios (shelled and crushed)

  • Wax paper

  • Knife

How to Make Chocolate Covered Figs:

  1. Rinse and dry your figs

  2. Cut the figs in half. Set aside.

  3. Melt 1/4 cup chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon coconut oil. (I used a double boiler, but you could use a microwave. If using a microwave, melt in 10 second increments on a low heat setting). This amount of chocolate will be enough to dip about 8-10 figs depending on their size.

  4. Dip each fig into the chocolate and place on a plate covered in wax paper

  5. Optional: Sprinkle some crushed pistachios over the chocolate dipped portion of the fig while the chocolate is still wet.

  6. Place the figs in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes for the chocolate to set up

  7. Eat within a day of creating and enjoy!

Recipe Notes:

I purchased my figs at Whole Foods, but you may be able to find them at a local grocery store in the specialty foods section. In the United States, I often find them in the month of AUGUST.
