In search of something to help me tame my wild, growing out, short, thick, wavy, and sometimes frizzy hair, I wandered down the aisle of my favorite local Target (one of my “happy places”) and found a cute hair tie that resembled a scarf and scrunchie. I picked it up because it was super cute, but instantly put it down again because it was $10. It was leopard print, so I knew I could wear it with many things, but $10? For one hair tie?

I walked away, thinking I didn’t need it, especially for that price. Then, I went right back, like I do every time I really intrigued by something, picked it up and threw it in my cart. I really knew I would use it, so yes, I forked over my hard-earned ten dollars for a scrunchie.

As soon as I got home, I immediately tested it out. I was quite skeptical of the price versus the actual effect it would have on my overall style. I soon found out, it was way more than a scrunchie. It was not only cute, but it was super versatile! I could detach the scarf from the scrunchie and wear it as a headband or tie it onto a handbag, hat or more. The scrunchie alone could be used as a hair tie or cute bracelet.

Or, when combined, they make an incredibly easy and SUPER CUTE hair item that I now find myself wearing quite often. Even in my crazy short hair!

I saw Target had more prints and solids of these scrunchie + scarf combo, but I just didn’t’ want to pay $10 for each one. Knowing I wanted more in many prints and colors, I figured out how to make a DIY scrunchie scarf out of things I had around my house.

Read on to see how I made my own scrunchie scarf in one minute.

I love scarves. I’ve collected vintage scarves for years. I set to work creating a prototype using one of my scarves and a scrunchie. I took one of my long, skinny vintage Liz Claiborne scarves and tied it onto a velvet scrunchie I already had. I twisted it all into my hair, and while it looked cute, I thought it may be too much for many people. The scarf made a HUGE bow.

While a HUGE BOW may be right for some looks, I was wanting a more understated style. So, I went onto Amazon and found some skinny and not-too-long scarves in a set of 10. They were quite inexpensive at around $14 for the set. With the amount of variety of prints and colors in the set, I knew I could wear them with many outfits.

I already had tons of scrunchies from a huge set I ordered on Amazon for around $10 a couple of years ago. With all the colors of scrunchies I owned, I could make at least 10 different scrunchie scarf combinations for under $25! This sure beat the $10 per scrunchie scarf at Target.

I made a one minute video for my YouTube channel “Carolyn Braden” that shows how I tied it on AND how I put it in my hair. It’s an AWESOME hair tie to have when you are having a bad hair day. It instantly enhances your hair style to make it look fab! I show you it’s versatility by showing you how to tie the bow in the front AND the back!

In my video, I use my DIY scarf scrunchie, my Dyson Corrale hair straightener (which is cordless and I LOVE IT!) and Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to complete the look. My hair was super frizzy (a result of the high humidity in my Florida home environment), so I use this combination a lot!
