The Crafty Inspiration

I was drawn to craft several spider themed creations in 2025 after seeing so many spiny-backed orb weaver spiders in our yard. I love watching spiders spin webs and think they are some of the smartest and creative creatures in our world.

Their webs looked like rainbows as the sun hit them at the right moment, and I saw pastel and iridescent colors. I thought I could make a traditional black spider ornament or I could get creative and make a fun pastel and iridescent one and so I did.

Spider Balloon

I did make a traditional black spider balloon creation and you can see it and my tutorial for it here. You can make it in any colors that you want. I always think pink is a great color to make a spider as a pastel pink spider doesn’t exist in nature. Well there is a Pink Prowler spider, but it’s not as pink as you’d think.

I think it’s fun to create things in art that don’t exist in nature. It’s your creative brain breaking through when you understand the sky isn’t always blue, the grass isn’t always green and the ocean is not always blue.

Using Your Imagination

When I was an art teacher, I read the book Sky Color to my elementary students at the beginning of the school year. It helped them think outside the box when it comes to thinking about what colors are in nature and how to creatively use color in their projects all year.

If you are one of those thinkers that thinks things have to be “black or white”, you are missing out and this book can help you see beyond that way of thinking. If you find yourself telling your kids, your students or your grandkids that they have to color the grass green in a project, read Sky Color by one of my favorite authors, Peter H. Reynolds.

Why Make This Spooky-Cute Craft?

I made this spider DIY ornament for my all-season driftwood tree that I created. I hung it with my oyster shell ghost ornaments. If you make this, you can gift it, hang in on your all-season tree, or sell it in your online craft shop or at a craft fair. Kids will love the iridescent fuzzy legs and the google eyes really make this come alive!

How to Craft the Cutest Spider Ornament

Now for the DIY ornament tutorial. It took me about 10 minutes to craft but if this takes you longer than 10 minutes, that’s okay! Sometimes the first time you do anything, it takes a little longer but I can guarantee you, the next one will take less time! You’ll need the following supplies and all links will bring you to either Walmart, Amazon, or Target, where I get many of my craft supplies.

Cutting the pipe cleaners

Step-by-Step Tutorial

I took 4 pipe cleaners, lined them up evenly, found the center, and used scissors to cut them in half. I know spiders have 8 legs, but after testing 8 legs, I decided my spider didn’t look “full” enough, so I ended up with 16 legs. Since this is a make-believe pastel spider craft, this is A-OK!

Adding the eye hook

Next, I laid all the pipe cleaners out, bunched them up evenly and slid them through the wood bead hole. With this many pipe cleaners, they stay right in the bead and do not need to be glued. Then I took an eye hook and screwed it into the soft wood bead, using a bit of pressure, at the top for hanging. I used jewelry pliers to make this step easier.

Next, I bent the leg at an angle. I also bent “feet” to hold the pom poms.

I added hot glue to the feet and topped it with a tiny pom pom.

I used Liquid Fusion glue to add two small google eyes to the wood bead and cut a piece of ribbon to add to the eye hook for hanging.
