2024 Update: The Walmart Egg chairs are survivors! They survived Hurricane Ian which hit our home on September 28th, 2022. See how they held up by clicking this link.

Ah, the ever popular Egg Chair. It’s shape started around 1959 and many versions of it have been created over the years. If you do an online search for “tulip chair”, “womb chair” or “swan chair”, you’ll see how their designs are all connected. They are all round-ish shaped chairs that have a lot of style and are super comfortable.

With my first purchase of an egg chair, I fell in love. We now own 5 egg chairs in three different styles, so I feel like I’ve become an expert in the chair style. After doing a recent Google search, I saw that many people are interested in adding an egg chair or swing to their home, but have a lot of questions.

After testing out several egg chair varieties, I wanted to be able to share my love of egg chairs and what I’ve learned from each one. Read on to find out everything you need to know about egg chairs.

1- Walmart Better Homes and Garden Egg Chair

Me and My Mini American Eskimo Dogs

This was the third brand of egg chair we purchased. I needed some new porch chairs, as my previous porch chairs weren’t quite fitting in with my aesthetic of our Florida home.

This Walmart egg chair was the lowest cost I could find at $297. I wondered if this less expensive egg chair would have as good quality as the $550 one (see that one towards the bottom of this article). So, I ordered two and began my testing.

Minnie Pearl loves hanging out in the egg chairs with me

This egg chair frame came in about three separate pieces in one large box. My husband, the great “putter-togetherer” put each one together in about 15 minutes. They came with some decent tools that made it an easy process.

My husband, Tommy, being the great guy he is

As he put them together, I noticed the chair and cushions were a decent quality. The “wicker” is on the thin side and more of a plastic material. I am concerned that the hot, Florida weather will be a bit brutal on these chairs, but we are about 2 months in, and they are still looking good.

We do plan on keeping them on our covered porch year round. I know the legs will rust eventually with the salty air we also have (as we live on Sanibel Island). I also think the plastic wicker material will crack at some point too.

The Walmart egg chair without cushions

Overall, this is a decent quality chair that would look great on your porch or even in your home. I don’t think they’ll last forever, but the price is right for the quality. It is very comfortable to sit in for a long period of time.

I think their popularity lends a hand to why they are so expensive right now (outdoor living is currently a trend), but if you do a search for any kind of outdoor furniture, you’ll see that most is highly priced. Outdoor couches are as expensive as indoor couches right now!

The Walmart Egg Chair Completed

The cushions have been exposed to several heavy rains and repelled the water well. I will probably be treating the cushions at some point with some Scotchguard fabric spray to keep them looking nice. You can also purchase similar egg chair cushions on Amazon, so if the chairs hold up, I may be able to just replace the cushion at some point in the future if they start to look bad.

Our porch with our egg chairs

The stickers indicating “front” and “back” were a bit hard to get off without using a razor blade and some Goo Gone.

My gorgeous cat, hanging out in the egg chairs

My pets love sitting on the chairs on nice days. Here’s Monica, our Maine Coon, loving her porch time. I think they feel secure in the pod-like chair. She’s laying on the cute yellow pillows I added.

We added a waterproof woven mat-like rug to the egg chairs

I would NOT recommend purchasing the copper-ish table you see pictured in my photos. We got it at Walmart (online) with the chairs. After one rain, the top rusted. I knew it would rust eventually, but not after one rain and not after I wiped it off as soon as it got rained on. It was intended for outdoor use too, according to the product description.

We called Walmart and they allowed us to get a refund on the table after returning it to the store. It’s a shame because it was a storage table, great for blankets and outside decor.

The finished porch look

The storage table is even featured in the chair styling on Walmart’s website, which is how I found it and why I purchased it. It matched the chairs perfectly and was great for sitting drinks on and holding my orchid. I replaced it with a gold smaller garden stool from Amazon for now.

Our Foldable Picnic Table Set

Also on the porch, we have a foldable picnic table set that we got from Amazon. After a year of owning it, it has held up well. It has a little rust on the metal portions, and the wood is still in good shape. I plan on adding a clear polyurethane to the wood soon to keep it looking nice.

Succulent Planters From Lowe’s

I added some live succulents that I purchased from Lowe’s. They were very affordable and came in their own cute planters.

2- Amazon Triangular Egg Swing Chairs

Our Triangular Egg Swing Chairs

These triangular egg chair swings were a purchase from Amazon. I saw them in the HGTV Dream Home from earlier in 2021, and knew I wanted them for my home. They are more expensive than the Walmart egg chairs at around $330 each. The wicker is a better quality and thicker than the Walmart egg chairs (but still plastic), so the higher price makes sense.

I like the triangular shape because they seem to balance themselves well. They came in three sections, like the Walmart egg chair. These, however, took my husband a little longer to assemble. They were a bit hard to line up, so each one took him around 30 minutes.

The triangle shaped swing is well-balanced

I have read reviews on a round egg chair swing and many people said the round shape hurt their legs after a while. These triangular swings curve downward where your legs sit, which makes them very comfortable. The cushions are thick, making it even more cushy.

These swings came with 2 chains; a short and a longer one. We got them in a gray-ish color and hung them in our pool area. Because they are covered by a porch ceiling, we leave them uncovered. Despite being under a porch, each has gotten wet, and still looked brand new.

I look to these lasting quite a while as they have almost no metal exposed. They are very well made. These would look nice indoors or outdoors. If hanging an egg chair indoors, make sure you either use an egg chair stand OR ensure you hang it from a stud or beam. All egg chairs have a weight limit as well, so make sure you check all the details in product descriptions before purchasing one.

3- Target Egg Chair Loveseat

Studio McGee Target Loveseat Egg Chair

This is the egg chair of all egg chairs. It’s the first one of the style I purchased and locked me into loving the style of chair. It’s a wider egg chair, making it being an egg loveseat in a way. It has a weight limit of around 250 lbs., but my husband and I have both sat in it (combined we are over 250 lbs.) and never felt like it was struggling to hold us.

It’s cost was the most expensive of all our egg chairs at $550. I knew that was steep, especially for Target (it’s part of the higher priced Studio McGee collection), but I just really, really wanted it. I saw it on display in the store and saw that the frame was made out of coated metal (making it look like wood), but it also has some natural materials woven into it.

Using an egg chair cover to protect from rain

When we had this one on our “Relaxation Station” area of our porch, which was an area that got a bit wet from rain, so I kept it covered with an egg chair cover when it wasn’t in use. The cover did an excellent job of keeping it in perfect shape. If you have an egg chair that is exposed to weather elements, I do recommend getting a cover for it and taking the cushions indoors during long periods of non-use.

Using our egg chair loveseat by the pool

This was the most “indoor/outdoor” of all three styles we purchased. It would look gorgeous in a boho-style bedroom. I currently have it in my pool area with my egg chair swings. The cushion has held up well and has been sat in ALOT over the last six months. It’s a great place to take a little nap.

I had to wait quite a while this particular chair to come in stock at Target. I turned on a notification on the Target app to let me know when it came in stock. When it did, I had to add it to my cart and buy it immediately, as it was in high demand. (It still seems to be in high demand, 6 months later!). Shipping took about a month and the shipping company Target used wasn’t the best communicator, but it all worked out in the end.
