Naturally Protecting Your Pets and Home From Fleas

Naturally Protecting Your Pets and Home From Fleas

Both houses my husband and I have owned during our marriage have had a neighbor that didn’t take care of their backyard. And in both of these locations, we have had fleas find their way into our pet’s fur.

Yuck!

It’s always happened when we have lapsed on flea protection and it’s really, really hot outside. It’s like those suckers KNOW. It sends shivers down my spine seeing a flea try to burrow on my long haired white fur babies! We’ll do the flea shampoo, spray and vacuum and it takes care of them. Then we’ll get that flea protection going again and all is well in the Braden house.

This year, I’ve had it when it comes to fleas! I really hate giving our pets the chemical-laden flea protection pills. Though many of them have worked, they smell like chemicals and have made our pets vomit. That’s not cool. It may be more work for me to try the natural flea protection route, but their health is worth me trying.

I started researching natural flea remedies and came across an article by Rita Hogan, Canine Herbalist. Her ideas for a natural flea-free home were featured on the Dogs Naturally website and I’m going to try some.

I especially like the following flea-protection ideas:

  • Spraying our yard with Nematodes (tiny worm-like multicellular animals found in the soil) which can also help with ants, termites and grubs!

  • Spraying our yard with some homemade garlic spray

  • Spraying our pets with a homemade apple cider vinegar spray

  • Spraying our pets with an every day homemade herbal flea repellent

  • Purchasing an amber resin collar (which looks like a cute necklace too!)
